Because he can?
CNN reporter upset that the Navy Secretary carrying a gun. He is a civilian and all. I’m more interested in why he’s carrying it in dropped leg holster without an apparent need.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.

He’s celebrating that he’s not in DC and CAN carry.

He probably had some body armor available on short notice.

Because that’s what his hosts – the Marines – issued him, when he accepted their offer of a sidearm while he was onsite.

Only the officers and the secretary had weapons in the pic. I’m more concerned about the perceived need to disarm our marines and soldiers around the brass. (or is ‘perceived’ the wrong word?)
I mean hey, it’s what free countries do, disarm the men we rely on to maintain our liberty when the bosses are around. Can’t have freedom breaking out against the wrong control freak authoritarians. That ain’t good for the PTB. If we were actually free why would the PTB feel afraid of the people?

Need? I don’t care what his ‘need’ is. The Navy Secretary was in a war zone and he IS the Navy Secretary. I only wish all other US citizens could carry to while over there.

@Fred, check again, you can see several Marines in that pic have their rifles with them.

It’s pretty common for civilians in war zones to carry a sidearm. It would be unusual for him to not have one.

That is.. civilians sent over there by government agencies. Obviously not the media.

Worked in both Iraq and Afghanistan as a civilian. My contract did not allow for arms to be issued to me as I was there temporarily (a few weeks each), but the long term contractors I worked with were issued M9’s as per their contracts. All military personnel carried either a rifle or sidearm any time they went out doors on orders of the CG even though most never went outside the wire.

It always true: ONLY YOUR ENEMY WANTS YOU DISARMED.
Free citizens have a DECLARED right to do so. I think those officials and agents working UNDER OUR DELEGATED POWER should be allowed to so too.

He was offered a sidearm by the Marines when he got there and he accepted; the drop-leg was probably all they had configured at the time.
It’s nice to see the SecNavy being treated like the rest of us: you take what you get, they way they give it to you.
