The party of involuntary servitude

Some democrat wants people to serve a year in service of the country.

  1. Lyle Says:

“The” party? The two parties only pretend to disagree. After a day of arguing for the cameras and the press, they get together at their lodges for drinks and fellowship. They all serve the same master.

  2. Ron W Says:

Neither slavery nor INVOLUNTARY SERVITUDE, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. –13th Amendment

“Some democrat wants people to serve a year in service of the country.”

    Registered democraps excepted I’m sure.

Like a stopped clock, even dims are right once in a while.

But as usual they’re doing it wrong. Mandatory? No.

But national service to gain benefits and privileges is the foundation of the military. And capitalism for that matter.

  6. Paul Koning Says:

JTC: “the basis… of capitalism”? How did you arrive at that conclusion?

  7. Jay Eimer Says:

JTC – except in many cases the military won’t take demo leaning teens. Too much illegal drug use or criminal records. Of course she probably means the Peace Corps.

  8. Ron W Says:

@Huck, yep, typically They pass laws that EXEMPT themselves and government agents–gun control being a prime example. They would probably pay lip service to “the equal protection of the laws, but in actual deeds they are for discrimination and inequality.

“Our Government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the Government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself. It invites anarchy.” –Louis D. Brandeis, SCOTUS Justice, Olmstead vs U.S. ,1928, dissenting

  9. Phssthpok Says:

Involuntary servitude to The State is already in place (See also: Fed. Income Tax), so I’m not sure what all the fuss is about…

  10. Don Says:

…and they get to decide what “service” means, and it eventually won’t resemble what you and I want it to mean.

  11. JTC Says:

Paul, pay to play, bro. TANSTAAFL, etc.

    Jay, see response to Paul.

  12. Paul Koning Says:

I must be missing something. I read “national service is…. the foundation of capitalism”. Um, no, it isn’t. You don’t even need a government to have capitalism, and you certainly don’t need one that practices involuntary servitude.

  13. Ron W Says:

@Phssthpok, yes, updating a portion of the Brandeis quote: “The government has become a law-breaker and it has bred contempt for the law”.

  14. JTC Says:

Paul, yeah you’re missing something; the extrapolation of (any) service performed for a fee, pretty much the definition of capitalism.

You missed the part about “no to mandatory” too, but that’s probably because you’re being a bit willfully obtuse.

One wonders who didn’t know that already, and why they chose not to know it.

A great meme with inexhaustible possibilities…
    “The only reason dimocrats…”

You could get a lot of mileage out of that meme…until eon steps in and tells the truth, finishing the line with “…do anything is to kill you because you’re not them.”

  16. JTC Says:

Dang it that last was from here and meant to be shared over at DaybyDay…which I’ll do now.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
