Can somebody in the press, or even the government, please define ‘assault rifle’ for me. Since his hands are what he actually used to commit violence are they ‘assault hands’?

Fred – there is an official definition for assault rifle. According to US Army, must be select fire and shoot a mid-power cartridge. Further an assault rifle usually has a straight stock (limit muzzle rise in full auto) and high sights (necessitated by the straight stock).
OTOH, my hand becomes an “assault weapon” if I hit your face with it.

That SBR article is a wonderful illustration of just how stupid California gun laws are. The writer talks about all the cosmetic changes you can make to the stock, flash hider, and grip to make it California compliant.
