Make appliances great again

I’ve yammered on before about how bureaucrats and regulations make things suck. The government has screwed up washing machines, gas cans, automobile engines, shower heads, toilets, diesel exhaust systems, box cutters, matches, and on and on and on. So, I concur #MakeDishwashersGreatAgain

Well….I agree in general, BUT, the new Bosch Dishwasher we got last summer does a better job, is easier to use, and holds more and bigger stuff for the same footprint, than the previous two we owned, or any other that I’ve used for that matter. And it’s far quieter. I mean amazingly quiet, like you don’t know it’s running unless you get right up to it or it’s super quiet in the house already.

The one drawback to it? It takes far longer to run a complete cycle. Also it came with some plastic flappy thingies that I cannot see could be of any use (designers got a bit over-zealous there), so we took them out.

We have a Bosch dishwasher that’s good, and a Bosch washer that sucks severely. It routinely takes 1.5 hours to run a “25 minute” wash. It uses so little water that it takes forever to rinse. It does clean tolerably well if you are patient enough.
I’ve been tempted to replace it with a commercial washer (hotel type) on the assumption that those are designed to work fast and use enough water, rather than catering to California politically correct BS notions. It’s my water, for *** sake, not some politician’s or some German nerd engineer’s.

Yeah, the low-consumption, front-load washers are an abomination. I recently spent a couple weeks with someone who has an old top-loader, and wow!– I’d forgotten how fast a big load can get really clean. With our new, more expensive unit we have to plan the day around the super long run-times.

Bear in mind that the new machines are designed to use really lousy cleaning agents. That is one of the major reasons for the long cycle times. The bad soap situation needs to be addressed. The newer “pod” type soaps seem to be an improvement, as they appear to contain a bit of liquid dish-washing soap, with anti-sudsing agents. You REALLY don’t want to put that hand soap in a machine by itself. Your kitchen will be knee deep in bubbles, as an idiot roommate demonstrated twenty years ago.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
