I’ve been using Polar Pure for two decades. It’s suppose to kill everything but it takes time to work on protozoan parasites.
Once it’s done the iodine and any objectionable taste can be dropped out with a piece of a vitamin C tablet.
It’s also long lasting and stores better than the pills, and is much more cost effective.
My biggest objection to the filters is from seeing them in use. They’re hard to hold, hard to pump, and I see people shifting their grip and cross-contaminating the output hose all the time. Bring along some everclear for wiping these things down.
Lately the trend has been for gravity filtration with the Sawyer type inline filter. However these clearly do not protect against viruses.

Katadyn Water Filters, Micropur & Desalinators
katadyn.com
PREMIER prepper/survival standard. Recommended by Bruce Clayton pHD in his book, “Life After Doomsday” [on-line copies are free]. Filters ALL microorganisms less than 0.2 micron size. Filters are Silver-impregnated to protect against contamination. Expensive, but, there is nothing better. Volume from 1-person to large encampments. After all, what is your life and those of your clan worth?
Full disclosure: I have NO financial interest.

I’ve used the Katadyn hiker pro the past few years and it’s worked well.
Everyone loves confirmation bias, but glad to see it’s alright on the test.

Don’t buy the life straws. They only work for your mouth.
The Sawyer or whatever alternative works in your mouth or to fill a bottle or pot. Way more practical.
