I mostly avoid crowds
Because a mob will murder you.
Not to be taken lightly, humans in packs can be dumb, overreact, and have a sort of herd mentality when not angered. If you doubt me, go to the grocer and see how many people there are absolutely unaware of anything around them. A huge peeve of mine is the idiot who puts their cart in the center of the aisle then stands close to the product. This idiot has blocked anyone from going around them. As I’ve gotten older and crotchetier, I just move the damn buggies. But this ain’t a post about that, it’s a post about this:
Mobs and hoards are dangerous places to be. Avoid them. If you see one, get out.

‘hordes’
Yet I agree completely. I barely manage to go to the state fair each summer because of the masses, and avoid nearly all malls completely.

And it seems that stores (Walmart, especially) cram more junk in, so the aisles become narrower. I’ve been in stores where there is BARELY enough room in the aisle for a single shopping cart, much less two passing. And then the end caps tighten that up….
Never mind the staff restocking….

The Extinction Rebellion protesters did not face a mob. They faced a small number of counter-protesters from among the stalled commuters.
Had the guys dragged off the trains faced a mob, they would have been running for their lives long before being dragged off the trains, not being helped up and led out of the station by the more passive commuters after being removed by one or two of the people they were harassing.
