Gun ownership was reported to be between 40 and 50 percent prior to 1994. In October of 1993, it was at 51%. Less than 3 years later, it had fallen down to 38%.
Crafted report leading the readers to a completely wrong impression. Focuses on “mass shootings” and “quotidian guns violence” or “deaths by gun” instead of “crazy people committing murder”.
Addressing this latter item is the path to solving “gun crime” but even then the lawless will never obey laws.
Screwdrivers, knives, hammers, baseball bats, bricks and automobiles (to name a few) are all used to cause death, don’t hear a word about “control” or new laws needed for those, do we?
Horribly flawed. Gun sales calculated on how many NICS checks done per state, but many states have state issued permits which allow gun sales without NICS checks.
Concealed carry permits, or state level firearm permits where the state does a background check when issuing the permit.
That carries down to other calculations and makes the entire report seriously flawed.

I’m skeptical of any survey of self-reported gun ownership rates, because a lot of people simply will not talk to a stranger about their guns.
You can see this if you look at the Gallup polling on gun ownership.

Gee, I wonder what was going on back then?

And that’s just scratching the surface.

It’d get an F in a freshman course at college.
