Data on various 9mm loads shot in barrels from 2 inches to 18 inches.
I’ve been pondering a pistol caliber carbine. I’m looking at a 7 inch or 4 inch barrel and this makes me thinks there’s quite a bit of difference.

I analyzed this data set when I was planning my 9mm AR build. The velocity curve has two knees, the first is at 7 inches followed by a slower increase until about 10 inches. After 10 inches you get precious little improvement.
I don’t think that it’s a coincidence that most 9mm subguns seem to have barrels in the 7-10 inch range. Uzis are 10 inches. Mini Uzis and STENs are almost 8. Full size MP5s are 9.

If you load your own, you can get a lot of difference. Some of the newer powders are so fast that only about 50 fps difference shows up between 4″ and 16″. Power Pistol will show up to 350 fps improvement going from 4″ to 16″. Most OTC ammo I’ve tried gives 150-200 fps improvement to the carbine.
Manufacturers like the fast stuff, less powder, less cost.
