Brazil says no

David Kopel reports that the citizens of Brazil rejected by a pretty good margin a measure to prohibit the commercial sale or manufacture of all firearms and ammunition. Excellent. This 64% to 36% vote will damage the international gun prohibition movement. Initially, it looked like Brazil would pass it but an effective campaign quelled it. Good!

I figured I’d find a blog entry here about this story. What struck me as funny is that the opponents of the ban cited their “constitutional right to bear arms” when, according to the news report I heard, Brazil’s constitution enumerates no such right. Seems like the [imported] talking points outran the facts.

That’s not to say that I would have agreed with the proposed measure; I’m just commenting on our exportation of “git yer filthy gubmint hands off ma guuhn and ma truhck.”

I recall reading somewhere that while the right is not specifically enumerated there are other references that seem to imply such a right exists. Not sure about their constitution but ours has unenumerated rights. Maybe that’s the case.

Good news for Springfield Armory. I’d been worried about how it would affect their relationship with Imbel…

And still no blood in the streets in Brazil.

    Oh, wait…

[…] That, the citizens of Brazil rejecting a gun ban and a Brady Center person resigning all in a couple of weeks indicates trouble with the anti-gun crowd. […]

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
