End TBI checks

The Tennessean notes a bill to allow the FBI to conduct NICS in Tennessee instead of having the state bureau of investigation do it:

Background checks on firearm purchases in Tennessee would be performed by the FBI instead of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation under legislation headed for a vote in the state Senate.

Currently, the TBI charges gun dealers a $10 fee to do a background check on customers, while the FBI does it for free through the National Instant Background Check System, or NICS.

That $10, of course, has always been passed on to the buyer. I’d like to see it pass.

Prediction: When (and if) it’s transferred to the feds TBI will complain about lost revenue.

Is this not part of a decades-long trend toward federalizing pretty much everything?

    And…

Posit; More people by far die in auto accidents, road rage, criminals using cars for their purposes, carjackings, etc., than by “gun crimes”. (It’s a fact, so don’t even start) Hence it would actually make far more sense (if you accept the premises behind the NICS) to do federal background checks on perspective automobile purchasers. What? It makes no sense to you? Exactly! You see, if you try to apply these leftist concepts logically and with a knowledge of the facts, they fall apart in about two seconds.

Lyle: Point taken. However, the feds are doing background checks on all gun purchases through licensed dealers, so state checks are supefluous. Of course, the reason federal checks aren’t mandatory for auto purchases or drivers licenses is that those would inconvenience many more voters…

[…] I mentioned before a bill to end TBI checks (and save me $10 each time I buy a gun). Well, that fine news organization Volunteer TV is trying to scare folks over the bill: Lawmakers in the State House are considering a bill that would get rid of the $10 fee you now pay for a background check when you buy a gun. […]

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
