ATF to open a store to boost employee morale

Yes, it seems the employees of the agency have low morale and a deep distrust of management, no doubt due to all the scandals. So, they decide to waste tax payer money:

According to information obtained by Townhall, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms will soon be opening up a store inside ATF Headquarters in Washington D.C. in an effort to boost morale.

“Currently the Office of the Director is in the process of coordinating the opening of an ATF store, which will be located in ATF HQ. The mission of the store is to serve current and former employees of ATF, Task Force Officers, and family members by promoting the general welfare and morale of the employees of ATF by providing, encouraging and supporting social, educational, and recreational activities of interest to its employees. In the coming weeks, more information will follow about the ATF HQ store,” ATF Chief of Strategic Management (OSM) Ron Humphries wrote in an email to employees on October 28, 2013.

ATF e-forms suspended to show you who’s boss

The Spite House takes out more of its petty hatred to political enemies by shutting down the electronic forms section of the ATF site. Because, you know, leaving it in place costs more than paying some one to take it down. I suppose someone will really respond to emails, right:

eForms Outage

Due to the lapse in appropriation of federal funds, the e-Forms system is temporarily suspended until further notice.

ATF: Also incompetent

An OIG audit of their bungling of a an FFL revocation case concluded: “that the New Orleans Field Division did not comply with ATF’s administrative action policy in the Guns & Ammo case and did not follow instructions it received from ATF headquarters…(and) also found that this case highlighted the problems that can result from the delays in ATF’s inspection process”

ATF: Struggling for relevance

Seems they were left out of the loop and the FBI traced the Navy Yard shooter’s gun without them. So, any federal agency can track guns to their owners. That database we’re not supposed to have.

Also, the bit about ATF struggling for relevance made me laugh. Good.

ATF and trust(s)

ATF has released their proposed rule in sticking it to bitter clingers err trusts.

August 30, 2013

On the NFA rule changes

Looks like the NFATCA petitioned for a look at the rules and ATF went and made up different rules, then cited NFATCA.

ATF also cites one case of someone trying and failing to get a suppressor after being denied. Yes, ATF noticed that the owner of the trust was a prohibited person and denied the transfer. Odd.

Also, genius from the comments:

Something has to be done. Too many criminals paying $500 to a lawyer to establish a trust, then spending $15k more to buy a machine gun, $1k more to buy a silencer, $400 more in tax stamps and waiting 8-10 months to go kill a bunch of people. Enough! We need tougher gun control! This is way too easy!

Heh.

But gun registration is illegal

So, why are ATF agents talking registration with firearm dealers?

So, Obama bypassed congress and issues some petty executive orders mostly to be an asshole to law-abiding gun owners

Here’s the White House press office piece. Short version is that there will be no more re-importing of weapons that the US government gave to foreign countries. And for a trust or corporation to purchase an NFA item, individuals associated with the entity would have to undergo a background check. You know, because of all those times NFA weapons and imported collectible firearms are used in crime. Oh, wait. That hardly ever happens. I can think of two weapons that involved NFA crimes, one was a doctor who shot the woman he was having an affair with with his MAC-10 and the other involved a stolen suppressor. These happen so infrequently that when they do, they’re a big deal on blogs. And on the trust issue, it’s already illegal for a prohibited person to possess a weapon. And ATF doesn’t prosecute for attempted illegal purchases anyway, so the background checks are mostly useless.

Mostly, these actions target law-abiding folks who don’t commit gun crimes. So, there will be no reduction in gun violence.

What others are saying (or, rather, what I’m paraphrasing they are saying):

These orders apply only to a small subset of firearms.

It’s just a petty, cry baby slap at those bitter clingers.

These are not real, actual problems. Well, yes.

But this was all the gun control lobby could get for $7M.

More fast and furious guns used in violence

It’s ridiculous.
