Haslam signs guns in parks

Hey, don’t you guys in the press confuse my shameless pandering to gun rights advocates with, you know, actually making gun rights a priority.
Haslam has clarified his position on guns in parking lots. Unnamed Democrat says what you’d expect unnamed Democrats to say. Campfield says this may mean that Haslam supports allowing permit holders to carry on campuses. Haslam has come a long way since his days in Mayors Against Guns. Good for him.
Caught wind of this yesterday. At the TFA meeting, Haslam was asked about the requirement of getting a permit in Tennessee to carry a handgun. He answered: Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Haslam told a Nashville meeting of the Tennessee Firearms Association that if lawmakers abolished the handgun-carry permit system and allowed people to go armed […]
I got the flyer in the mail this weekend that was going around. The flyer touts Haslam as strong on guns and has quotes from a veteran and NRA member so you know he’s serious and genuine. And that he didn’t just join the NRA recently. Oh, wait. I note that several people I know […]
Looks like he’s sending out a mailer touting his pro-gun street cred. You can see the mailer here. A few notes: Touts his recently purchased NRA life membership, which was a result of some bad press he got for joining Mayor Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Guns. Says out of state interests attacking TN gun shows were […]
WizardPC is none too happy. And he has video of Haslam’s remarks. I found it interesting he consulted TFA on how to strengthen his second amendment bona fides and then disregarded that advice.
ACK has a copy of Haslam’s letter resigning from the group. Also, my sources tell me this will be a topic of discussion on one of the local TeeVee stations this weekend.
ACK has an article in The Nashville City Paper about TN Gubernatorial Candidate Bill Haslam leaving Mayors Against Guns: Haslam has had plenty of opportunities, had the group truly offended his sensibilities on guns, to withdraw from the group before now. He neglected to do so. Therefore, it is not a stretch to imagine that […]
Michael Silence has more on Mayor Haslam leaving Mayors Against Guns. And, yes, I’ll start using Pilot Stations to fill up. They’re the only place in town that sells E85.
Seen at ACK’s: Bill has resigned from the group. He did so because he believes MAIG has expanded its mission in ways that go far beyond fighting criminal gun use, including a number of ideas that he does not share. Good for the mayor.
I’ve followed the issue of gubernatorial candidate and Knoxville mayor Haslam and and his unfortunate membership in an anti-gun group for a bit. A reader notes: Hey, I went to the Mayors Against Illegal Guns web site and Knoxville and Haslam are not there. Did he quit? He did distance himself from them in the […]
Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam belongs to the anti-gun group Mayors Against Illegal Guns (background here). He has recently begun to distance himself from the group and good for him. As he has stated a few times, he signed the petition that had some core principles that he thought everyone could agree on. Well, here are […]
Michael Silence does some reporting: I put a call into Haslam to get some response, and he graciously called me back. He said in retrospect he probably should not have signed a petition by the anti-gun group. But he noted at that time the first four or five goals of the group were planks “anyone […]
Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam is running for governor. He belongs to a an anti-gun group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which keeps having members exit. One of his gubernatorial opponents says: As for the Second Amendment, he parts ways with Mayor Haslam, comparing the idea of suing gun manufacturers for crime (which Haslam has gone […]
The video mentioned here is now online here. A few notes: Gene Patterson acknowledges WATE hasn’t covered Haslam’s involvement in this group. The general consensus shared by the panel (and Glenn and me) is that Haslam didn’t know all the details about the group he joined. Apparently, Knoxville has been having gun buybacks. A reader […]
Terry Frank brought it up on the boob tube: Gene asked Frank Cagle, Mike Cohen, and me if Mayor Haslam’s alliance with Bloomberg might have an effect if Haslam ran for Governor. We all agreed it would. Cagle said something to the effect that he could envision a 30 second spot and he reminded viewers […]
Regarding my boycott of Pilot Oil due to Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam’s membership in an anti-gun group, I received this comment: As an employee of the Haslam administration I encourage sayuncle to contact me via email as I may be able to offer a communication venue if he is having trouble connecting with the mayor. […]
Bitter notes that The Shooting Wire is taking on the anti-gun mayors: Without belaboring a point, their organization is, indeed, one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Neither, however, does it represent the end of the firearms industry or the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. It represents another obvious sign that the profession […]
Part of the reason why Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam’s participation in Mayors Against Guns is important is because of the group’s ties. The group received $175K from The Joyce Foundation. The Joyce Foundation has funded plenty of anti-gun groups, even the hysterical ones. Here’s a round up of who they have funded and it reads […]
Late for Dinner says good for Haslam: To his credit, Haslam would not back down. He said he doesn’t understand why anyone would not want illegal guns off the street, and invited Gill down to the KPD evidence room to see what they were talking about. Good for Mayor Haslam. As I said there: The […]
It’s good to dance with who brung ya: Legislation that would allow handgun-carry permit holders to be armed in all of the state’s public parks is headed to the governor for his consideration.
Don’t rush gun bills before NRA meeting in Nashville Also, he’s opposing 11 of the 27 pro gun bills. Of note, to me, are: Opposition to lifetime permits and exempting permit holders from background checks. The state needs tax money, yo. Opposition to removing prohibition of guns in schools and parks. Because those permit holders […]
Our governor says that exclusion may get the bill to pass and he will fight to keep schools out of the final bill. And, you know, no violent crimes from which you may need to defend yourself are ever committed on campuses. Right? Via David, with the irony.
It’s funny to watch the race unfold. Unnamed Democrat doesn’t really seem to have his heart in the game. Or his head. Before, he was bashing Haslam for being a member of the gun control group Mayors Against Guns. Now, he says that Haslam is an extremist stooge of the NRA. Well, which is it? […]
Unnamed Democrat chimes in: While I am a strong supporter of second amendment rights, I am shocked at Bill Haslam’s lack of common sense and total disregard for public safety. This is irresponsible” said McWherter. “Bill Haslam is willing to put the safety of Tennessee families in jeopardy, and this speaks to the core of […]
Haslam and the other guy are looking to get support from gun owners. Haslam joined the NRA after some one pointed out he was the member of an anti-gun group. Even Unnamed Democrat joins in on calling Haslam weak on gun rights. John Harris of TFA says they probably won’t endorse anyone. And for about […]
Liston endorses Ramsey. Ron Ramsey responded to his gun rights questionnaire here. The Haslam campaign answers without specifics. Why, it’s like there might be something to this parody ad? Just look at that sunset.
A look at TN gubernatorial candidates on guns: All seven major candidates express support for Second Amendment rights but differ sharply on guns in bars and other issues. Three Republicans – Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam, Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville and U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp of Chattanooga – said they support renewing the guns-in-bars […]
At least, that’s how I read this.
Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
