Olofson Update

David Codrea reports that the Supreme Court has denied cert in the case.
Sebastian has an analysis of the Olofson case.
David Codrea reports that Olofson’s conviction for unlawful transfer of a machine gun has been upheld. Also: It was not an abuse of discretion for a court to exclude the defendant’s expert from the courtroom while the government’s expert was testifying. So, the defendant’s expert was not allowed to see nor address claims made by […]
You’ll recall the story of David Olofson (past coverage here). He was supposedly sent to jail for a malfunctioning firearm. Reviewing the report from an ATF field agent don’t seem to jibe with some of Olofson’s claims. The agent claims that the firearm selector switch moved through all three positions (including the naughty switch) and […]
Sebastian notes that the M16 parts allegedly bought by Olofson are magazines and bolts. That would mean they weren’t M16 parts at all.
Olofson responds to Sebastian’s piece on his case.
That pretty much nails. A few of us have been having that conversation off line for a while now. Partially due to uncertainty and because, frankly, that view would piss off a lot of pro-gun people. But Olofson fucked up and could have fucked us in the process. That doesn’t make ATF any less culpable […]
I did not catch it but the Olofson case was covered again on Lou Dobbs’ program.
Illegally and intentionally modify your weapon so that it becomes an NFA weapon and you’re a police officer: It’s OK. Just change it back and fill out the paperwork next time: A former state Department of Justice drug agent accused his colleagues last year of illegally modifying their state-issued rifles, according to emails the agency […]
Tam has a video of a Glock with some drop in parts going full auto: It used to be that you needed a file, an Arkansas stone, maybe a Dremel, and a fair amount of mechanical ineptitude to mess up your heater. Yup. Also, we now have case law that says a malfunctioning gun could […]
David Olofson has been released from prison.
Olofson attorney on Lou Dobbs .
Kevin reports that Olofson may get a new trial: Also, here’s a link to Fincher’s appeal.
A bit back, I linked to this post at Lagniappes which was rightfully critical of some of the GOA shenanigans regarding the Olofson case. It was a good read, I thought. Anyway, Sailorcurt left a few comments that showed the inconsistencies in ATF’s actions. But those comments never showed up. Curt cross-posted one of the […]
Oh, yeah, we spent it all on an armored personnel carrier for Dellview, North Carolina. The WaPo: Violent crime has increased in some cities in recent years in part because local police are too cash-strapped to fight it, the ATF chief said Monday. The comments by Michael J. Sullivan, acting director of the Bureau of […]
Caught the show just now. Not much details in the Olofson case other than an introductory to it. I guess Savage will be on tomorrow. Also, Dobbs called the Bush administration out over the Heller case. Go Dobbs. It was a very pro-gun piece.
So says David Codrea. Took a while, as I reported here on 1/18 that I was hearing rumors the Olofson case would make the show. The Olofson case involves a malfunctioning weapon being classified as an MG. I’ll TiVo it.
I hear the Olofson case (malfunctioning AR goes full auto) will be covered by Lou Dobbs on CNN.
Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
