How’s it doing? Depends who you ask: One year after 11 law enforcement agencies increased patrols in Knoxville’s gun zone, half of the city’s gun murders still happen within a three mile radius east of downtown. The area is part of an initiative called Project Safe Neighborhood. Police say so far, the project has been […]
No kidding: The interviews indicated that gun-control laws would have had little effect on the study subjects’ criminal behavior. Most got their guns through a variety of ways, including borrowing, stealing and taking them by force, the professor said. The book is underwritten by the U.S. Justice Department’s Project Safe Neighborhoods program.
This was emailed to me by reader JKB: ======================================== I’ve been taking a look at this Syracuse University Clearinghouse on federal law enforcement data (http://trac.syr.edu/). I got to the clearinghouse via this post at instapundit. The ATF data is interesting. Seems the ATF enforcement is more active in rural areas than in the big cities. […]
New York did it. So did Boston. Memphis has set up a special gun court: Anyone caught carrying a gun illegally in Shelby County will get special attention from the criminal justice system starting next month. Criminal Court Judge Louis Montesi Jr. will hear all illegal gun cases in the general sessions court system on […]
A bit back, some readers gave me some grief over the fact I said I didn’t advocate the ATF being completely disbanded. Scaled back and scrutinized definitely but not disbanded. If we’re going to have gun laws (and we are), someone needs to enforce them. One such reason why they’re useful is I’m certain they […]
Nashville to enforce existing gun laws. I’ve been covering Project Safe Neighborhoods in Knoxville for a while. I generally approve of the program but wonder why such enforcement requires a special grant.
I’m guessing the Knoxville Police Department didn’t get the memo that Project Safe Neighborhoods is unfunded. I’ve seen a variety of billboards around Knoxville that state Gun Crime Means Hard Time and they give a contact number. The logo for PSN appears on these billboards.
Deb has a comparison of the recently unfunded Project Safe Neighborhoods.
The Bush Administration credited Project Safe Neighborhoods for the recent reduction in gun crime. The program was designed to go after black market guns by allowing local, state and federal agencies to coordinate and prosecute crimes committed with guns. This is a worthy goal in my opinion. But, thanks to an email from Lobbygow, we […]
Actual headline: Crime may be dropping in US, but gun possession is rising Are they implying that increased gun possession reduces crime? No. Are they implying that gun possession is equivalent to crime? Probably: By focusing on largely local gun-possession cases, federal prosecutors and bureau agents are increasingly less likely to investigate and prosecute federal […]
The Republican platform is out. I’m skimming now. A few things leapt out at me: Private Property Rights The core of ownership in America has always been ownership of private property that a citizen can call his or her own. Republicans respect this tradition. For reasons both Constitutional and environmental, therefore, President Bush and the […]
