Welcome to the fish bowl

Police love the iPhone data trail: “When someone tells me they have an iPhone in a case, I say, ‘Yeah!’ I can do tons with an iPhone,” said Fazio, who works in the sheriff’s department high-tech crimes unit. The iPhones generally store more data than other high-end phones — and investigators such as Fazio frequently […]

speech to text

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Droid has speech to text. In any text box, you can hit the microphone button, speak into the phone and it will transcribe your words into text. I’ve found it to be mostly accurate. Only trouble is I feel silly using it when people are around. Other day, my wife asked me to pick up […]

Interesting

I used to have a blackberry. Now, I’m an android kinda guy. But this is neat: The United Arab Emirates — Dubai, etc. — is threatening to ban BlackBerrys because they can’t eavesdrop on them.

Good to know

Tip for videotaping people who might not like it. I have the ustream app on my droid. And, also, this deal where the police think your cell phone is a gun and justification for arresting you? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Up next, this pack of gum is a gun.

Soon to be an old geezer

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Given that I have never read an E-Book. I installed the Kindle app on the droid and never played with it.

Uh oh: One In Five Android Apps Access Your Private Data I am shocked. I mean, when the app tells me it’s going to access my data, I just don’t believe it. Meanwhile, the dual screen Toshiba Libretto looks cool, despite it’s really gay name. Runs Windows 7 and has USB and Flash Drive slots. […]

Notes From The Last Frontier

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

As I type this, it is 11:06 pm and still daylight. That really messes with me. I have excess pillows, towels, and robes blocking the windows to make it dark. On the plane, I sat next to a woman from NBC. I asked her what she was doing and she said “covering Sarah Palin”. I […]

Google TV is coming. It will run Android and have apps. Nifty.

My pockets have pockets. And in those pockets, are more pockets

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

I received my order for four pairs of 5.11 Covert Tactical Pants. You can get them at that link cheap but sizes and colors are limited. A brief review: 100% cotton and thick. One of the issues I have generally with khaki style pants is that they’re too thin, which, for me, makes them uncomfortable. […]

Android outsells iPhone in the first quarter. Now, we can argue about the better software (Android) or better hardware (Android, still) but the thing that’s going to ruin the iPhone is the carrier being AT&T. I’d have had one years ago if it weren’t for that.

So, Infiniti is doing an app for the iPad to, err, I dunno what exactly. Instead of doing that, why don’t you get some programmers to integrate the iPhone, Droid and other smart phones with your in-dash information screen? The current method kinda sucks.

Shot Timers

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

A look at timers for the iPhone. I should probably try one out for the Droid.

iPad

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Stopped by Best Buy the other day for some office supplies. Had a opportunity to play with the iPad. It was slick. Fast, pretty, easy to handle. I was impressed. I’ll probably never buy one because it is 1) made by Apple and 2) while it’s neat, I have other things that are cheaper that […]

Playing Catch Up

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

New version of iPhone OS looks to be merely catching up to Android.

What playlist for killing terrorists?

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

US special forces say the Taliban hates heavy metal. I knew there was a reason I didn’t like those guys. Update: I decided to create a play list of 10 songs entitled killing terrorists. It’s below.

My tactical car

Monday, March 29th, 2010

It’s black and has a lot of aluminum. But if it came in Flat Dark Earth, I’d have gotten one. And it needs rails I finally got tired of Google taunting me. And, based on the two car blegs, I made a choice. Last week, I picked up my Infiniti G37 (the Journey with the […]

What you wear

Friday, January 29th, 2010

A meme started by Marko and picked up on by Jay is what’s in your pockets. Well, here’s what’s in mine: Clockwise from top left: DOPP Regatta Magnetic Money Clip and Card Holder. I used to carry a decent wallet but it became uncomfortable. So, I went thin. A Leatherman Skeletool, which I highly recommend. […]

On the iPad

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

From what I understand, in addition to sounding like a feminine product, it has less functionality and a less friendly user interface than a netbook. And costs twice as much. And, unlike my Droid, it can’t multitask.

AT&T to lose iPhone Tomorrow

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

That’s the rumor. Too bad those of us who were waiting already got Droids.

Google Voice

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

A bit back, Ry sent me an invite to Google Voice. I’ve been playing with it and it’s pretty slick. Some features: You can send SMS texts from a browser you can use it to avoid minute overages on your phone (not an issue for me) it gives you what Verizon calls visual voicemail for […]

Droid catches thieves: Two young men from the Portland area, keen to get on the smartphone bandwagon without paying, broke in and stole a pair of Motorola Android handsets (along with other electronics) from a nearby household. What they didn’t foresee, however, was that one of the phones would have the free Lookout app, which […]
