Getting organized
This morning, I organized where I keep my carry rigs:

Then, decided I needed to organize my ammo cabinet:

I need more ammo.
Then, I discovered this on one of the Black Dog Machine magazines for my 22LR conversion kit for the AR:

Feed lips busted. These mags have only been in my ammo locker and a range bag. Never dropped one or done any tactical reloads or anything. Odd. So, yes:
Q: How many mags should you have?
A: More.
Magazines are perishable items. Buy more.
Ammo too, of course.

A. I think, you should have at least twice the number of magazines that you can carry per firearm. So if you can carry 1 in your semi auto and 4 on your duty belt 10 is the number of mags that are in service at one time. If you carry a revolver then 8 speed loaders so you can buy 4 double pouches, or 10 if you are as round as I am, and carry some on the outside of your bug out bag for quick access. There may be extra mags/speed loaders that need a little attention new springs, followers or floor plates that are out of service too. This allows you to carry the extra mags in your bug out bag with the extra ammo etc. Same for a rifle and shotgun although you may only have the mag on the firearm so I would have ammo in a box or container when I bug out with a shotty and/or bolt gun. I through shotty in there for the kids. For firearms that aren’t going to see much action then I have maybe a couple mags per firearm. No need to spend several hundreds on Ruger 22/45 if you are only going got shoot targets and small game. They don’t shoot back last I checked.
Q. What make and size is your ammo cabinet?

I don’t have a rule of thumb. I just got my smith and ordered 9 mags. And the two that came with it are a good start.
Ammo cabinet is a steel/plastic deal i got from Lowe’s for about $80. It locks. And if I buy another, they’re stackable.

Was the BDM mag stored loaded? Those polycarbonate .22 mags I don’t tend to store loaded since I don’t have a much faith specifically in the feedlips. Also note that solvents like Hoppes break them down.

That’s well-organized, but I didn’t see the “punch through” and “reach-out-and- touch-someone” stuff…you know: .308, 7.62×54, 30.06…

Had a Ruger Hot Lips mag split apart last year, but it was a pre-94 mag. I have 3 more pre-94 mag that are beaten but not broken.

You may want to consider painting your ammo cans to distinguish by caliber: orange for .22lr, Pontiac blue for .45acp, yellow for .223, black for .308, pink for 9mm, Royal blue for big Russian, etc.

I have 10 mags for each duty pistol I have an at least 3 for the other pistols and at least 2,000 practice and duty rounds in each caliber.

Robb, I had four Black Dog magazines that, between one range trip and the next, unloaded, spontaneously developed cracks in the feed lips. On one, the feed lips came apart at a touch and the follower and spring nearly hit me in the head.
Black Dog replaced all four for me. Contact them and tell them about the problem.
The only alternative is Ciener magazines, and their reputation for customer service is not good.

What’ll we do with all our hi-cap mags when Barry persuades Congress to make their possession illegal–you know ‘cuz we’re responsible for what that perp did in AZ and no one needs’em?? At least one proposed bill does that and they’re gonna be more civil now so the Republicans need to show “they can go along to get along”.
Is that gonna be when the reason for the 2nd Amendment really kicks in?

The only time you have too much ammo is when your house is on fire.
I’ve enough mags for my combat rifle. “Enough” is what I can reasonably carry in web gear times 4 for range and rotation.
I don’t have enough for my primary pistol. Same criteria as rifle. Where did I leave the Brown-well’s catalog?
Recreational weapons don’t have as many.
Hum? How does one count stripper clips? Individually or by the bandoleer?

I say go one better and have the stuff to MAKE your own ammo. Stock up on components and have a good press handy. Stock up on lead and start casting. I’ve got enough raw material in my stash to make bullets and shoot for a looong time.

After using every after market and name brand for the 10/22 I now only buy the steel lipped magazines. I have had many 35 and 50 round banana clips fail either at the point of entry or the spring itself. For the Ruger I would highly recommend these, but many people I know have had the plastic feed magazines for 10-15 years without failure.

its simple math.
The formula needed to find out the number of magazines needed is:
1.5N+1 where N is the number of magazines you currently have.
for example I have 15 magazines for my 1911 in 28super, so according to the math above would work like this.
1.5(15)+1=23.5(always round up) so i need 24, then i should work the man again at some point in the future.
