Ammo progression

In the early 1990s, my uncle was a deputy in the county I lived. He was talking about his carry ammo then. And the thing he told me was he alternated the ammo in his magazine. The first round was a Black Talon, the second was a Hydra-Shok, a Glaser, and the third was FMJ. This was also back when everyone carried Glock fo-tays. He said this was because he didn’t know what he’d have to shoot. I was reminded of the old school ammo days by this post from Tam: No doubt everybody then jumped into their 5.0 GTs and drove off with Red Hot Chili Peppers CDs blaring from the speakers. Hey, 1991 called; it wants its ammo back.

Heh. You know, I still have a few rounds of Black Talon and Hydra Shok around here somewhere.

Also, from that same post, comes a good list of ammo that performs.

Oh and this being the internet and all, my ammo choice is superior to yours and stuff.

What defense ammo do YOU feed your gatt?

  2. SayUncle Says:

    Remington Golden Sabers currently.

  3. Tam Says:

I carried GS’s in .45 for years. I was about to go over to the HST when I switched to carrying a nine.

  4. SPQR Says:

Ah, well, if only you weren’t holding it wrong …

  5. Patrick H Says:

    I love my Ranger-Ts, in both 9mm and 45.

9mm Gold dots are my preferred load but I’m happy with any modern deep cavity hollow point.

  7. Kermit Says:

Federal HST in .40, Walmart hollowpoints in .38/.357 and .45 ACP, and cast lead slugs in .45 Colt.

None, except the HST, are “top-line,” but I ain’t volunteering to stand downrange of any of ’em.

  8. nk Says:

Remington Golden Sabers, here. Even though Elmer Keith told me (in his book!) that a .36 cal, 80 grain lead ball is superior to these newfangled conical bullets.

My GT was actually an LX for insurance purposes, but it got wrecked. I wasn’t even going 80, so I guess I failed. Anyway, I have these Lehigh .45s that look outright satanic, but wouldn’t you know, I have to tweak some feedramps just to test them out.

  10. Mike V. Says:

CorBon DPX in my 9, GS 230 bonded in the .45

  11. Patrick Says:

I got two cases of HydraShok cheap that I use as carry practice/range ammo. It shoots much like the HST I usually carry.

And I would carry HydraShok without concern. Same with FMJ. And TMJ. And Range Safe. And bare lead. Even frangible (if that’s all I had). Basically, I’m happy to carry whatever I have because something beats nothing.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
