I still say this is stupid. Referendums cost a lot of money. What are we electing representatives for if we need to also spend money to have “referendums” on legislation as well?

It’s the result of not trusting representatives.
Which, ultimately, is a rebuke of our entire system of governance. Basically, if you can’t trust your representatives to get at least some stuff right, then representative democracy simply can’t work.
