The short answer
Charles asks Anybody support the War on Drugs?
Yes. Politicians who want to look tough on crime, police departments that want funding, and the existence of an entire agency of the fed.gov rely on the war on drugs.

Yeah, ’cause parents afraid they can’t always watch out for their kids doing something really stupid to themselves couldn’t possibly object to making drugs legal. Ordinary people couldn’t really just be against the harm done to the innocent family members from the addict.
Now, I disagree with these people. I think they’re wrong. I think the balance sheet comes down on the negative (especially with weed) for the WoD.
I also don’t disagree that the corrupt, the underfunded, and the power hungry don’t support the WoD as an excuse.
But I don’t for once think that they are the only people to support drug bans. Most people aren’t libertarian and don’t see giving up (or taking away) some liberties as part of living in a civilized society.
Like not having the liberty of driving 120 through a school zone. If you don’t hit anyone, what’s the harm? But there’s the potential of harm, and the potential outweighs your liberty.
You may think this position is wrong, but I’d have a hard time saying it’s evil.

…and don’t see anything wrong with giving up…

Masked, that has little to do with how the war on drugs is played out. There are plenty of problems with drugs (and gambling and alcohol and other vices) but the issue I have is with how the war on drugs is conducted. An ounce of weed is not sufficient justification for killing someone.

I don’t either, but that has little to do with the widespread support for it.
Most people either don’t know of such occurances or think them very rare and thus view those things as an unfortunate accident, and that a lot more people would die/be killed if drugs were legal.

I support the War on Drugs. Without that “war” my clients could get their supply through Wal-Mart and 7-11 stores, at vastly reduced prices.
I then couldn’t pay my out-of-country connections, who also are big supporters of the war. They also must use the profits to defend turf from their own government, (unless they have already bought them off, which is even easier then here in the USofA.)
