VA to Bloomberg: get bent
In VA, they passed a law that prohibits anyone but law enforcement officers from trying to make an illegal gun purchase from a firearms dealer. More here.

Okay, just to make sure I’ve got this :
They passed a law, to make it illegal, to do something that was already illegal… With an exception for LEOs, who can’t be prosecuted under the law anyway.
If I think about this too hard my brain will dribble out one ear.

Err, yeah. It’s more symbolic, I think.

As opposed to finding some sympathetic federal prosecutor and symbolically slamming the rulebook against the civilian ‘investigators’?
I know we can’t get Bloomberg himself without a massive streak of luck. I just honestly can’t see a point in symbolically declaring a new law against the same people who’ve just demonstrated that the rich and powerful are above the law.

Hell, doesn’t anybody see the next move? Do we all live in the present instant?
Bloomberg will just deputize them and trade on the ambiguity of which leo’s are qualified, since it wasn’t specified.
I can’t believe these people think they are clever.

If it previously was illegal only under federal law, this does change something – now, if the federal prosecutor declines to prosecute, the state or county can. And it will be in front of a local jury, not in the nearest big city with a federal court, and half the jury panel sure to be “shocked” to discover that you can just walk into a store and walk out with a gun (after a whole lot of paperwork and an automated background check).
But one question, how is “law enforcement officer” defined? If it allows a NYCPD detective to make illegal purchases in VA, all it’s accomplished is to make Bloomberg’s harassment campaign cost a bit more. OTOH, if the LEO must be within his jurisdiction or working with LEO’s who do have jurisdiction, then they’ve got it right.
