Yabbut the military was going to issue him armor. His parents just wanted him to have what is supposed to be the latest and greatest.
If you think the U.S. military should be using the latest and greatest you may be right, but you’ve obviously never dealt with Federal purchasing.

I think what Les was trying to say is that, it takes years for a major purchase program to work it’s way through the bureaucracy, so if it’s an item subject to commercial competition what was the “latest and greatest” when they started is far from it now. And half of the problem is rules put in place to keep the government from being ripped off…

However, does anyone believe the claim that this will stop 7.62 NATO rounds? Maybe at 800 yards, but if it’s effective against rifles at normal combat ranges, and light enough an engineer squad can work in them, they’ve made a bigger advance in the technology than Kevlar was in it’s time – and made all existing infantry doctrine obsolete…
