In an update to the sooper seekrit smoking room for legislators mentioned here, comes a confession:
State Rep. Joe McCord acknowledged today that he and others have been smoking in his legislative office suite, violating a state law that he supported.
Hypocrite.
But the Maryville Republican questioned a Nashville television reporter’s tactics in doing a story on the indoor-smoking activities.
Boo-hoo. I wonder if there are any substantial legal penalties for breaking this law? So far, my google-fu is weak.

Penalties for the smokers are a civil fine of $50 per offense, and for the persons allowing or organizing the smoking, a letter of warning for first offense, a $100 fine for second offense, and $500 per day for continued offenses.
I’d suggest they all shut the smoking room down asap, before some Democrat gets up the nerve to report them to the smoking police….

mikee, that’s the tyrannous workplace smoking law. there is a separate law that bans smoking in state buildings though it seems to not specify any sort of penalty.

McCord is a nice guy.
It’s too bad that he sold us out and voted for Naifeh, who appears to take great pleasure in making sure that I can’t carry my handgun into a restaurant which serves alcohol.

But it’s OK, because two years after supporting the law and one day after he was demonstrated to have broken it –
“McCord today said people have smoked in his office, including himself, but that the practice will cease.”
So there. He is going to stop smoking in his office.
No word on that “conference” room…

In Ancient Greece, they had acanthus leaf-shaped sculptures to decorate the capitals of the columns of their buildings.
In the chambers of the United States Congress, the capitals are decorated with representations of tobacco leaves.
Hey, tobacco is one of the bigger reasons why white guys from Northern Europe decided to come here in the first place!
American Indians get all snorkin and gigglin every time the white folks get all mental about tobacco, I betcha.
Hey, we can’t handle nicotine, they can’t handle alcohol. Or is it racist to say that obvious thing?

Any legislator who makes a law binding everyone and then breaks it should resign, right now.
