Well, you are right, you can buy the 10/22 and ammo for 200 bucks. But just try upgrading the 10/22 to shoot .223 when you want to shoot something/someone that needs a centerfire round. That will be a little more tricky…
Truth be told, I have a 10/22, the mannlicher(sp?) stocked version and I love it. And my only .223 rifle right now is a single shot… So sooner or later I do have to save up my pennies and plunk down for a self-loading scary black rifle.
Any particular walmart? The ones here around Nashville do not sell anything cool like that.
Speaking of which, I had been planning to upgrade my pain in the butt Mossberg plinkster to something less stressful to clean. Is that Ruger any better?
Once you get that 10/22, take a look at http://www.tech-sights.com No, I’m not affiliated, don’t get kickbacks, et al, I’m just a happy customer.
Easy to install, click adjustable, receiver mounted peep sights, with a sight picture very similar to your AR. What better way to keep in practice without breaking the bank?
Ok, I will bite – where else? Wal-Marts in my neck still carry firearms, but they are all cheapo high-powered sniper rifles… er… hunting rifles, or black powder. Even on GunBroker, there are a grand total of about seven 10/22s that are just barely under $200, and half of those have significant problems with them (not to mention I have an inherent distaste for buying things sight-unseen). Throw in the fact that buying a 10/22 also defeats the corollary benefit of the whole “practice on the AR-15 platform for 1/10th the price”, and I think I am just going to stick with the conversion kit for the time. And after sinking well over $1000 in the AR-15 (once my upper gets here, that is), I would really like to be able to afford to use it more than just periodically…
Not to mention that silencing the conversion kit (whenever I get around to that) will be a lot cheaper/easier than silencing a 10/22, since any of the three AR-15 uppers I have on backorder will already come with a threaded barrel…
While not a 10/22, a kit from Advantage Arms (I am not affiliated) will convert your Glock or 1911 to .22LR. I have had one for a few years and it works flawlessly. If I could get a hold of cheap Glock frame I would have a dedicated .22LR glock.
Linoge:
Take this with a grain of salt, as I’m still waiting on my paperwork to come back for my silencer, but everything I’ve read says you want to use a separate can for your .223 than your .22. I assume this is primarily due to pressure, but a secondary is that most .223 cans can’t be disassembled by the owner and .22 is prone to leaving heaps of build-up.
My base plan is to sell my Bushmaster Carbon 15 in .22lr, buy a 10/22 and put it in a stock that feels like an AR. I can use the net profits to buy a boat ton of ammo and mags.
Thanks for the heads-up, TNProgrammer. Seems a lot of .223/5.56 silencers that are not meant to be taken apart can still be fully immersed in cleaning solutions and drained… I guess that would help with the nastiness of .22, but I do not know. Good question to ask of whomever I purchase one from, though.
After I spent myself into oblivion buying 9MM,.223,.308, and garand ammo, I realized I could not afford to shoot all of it up. So I bought a 10/22 and a 22/45,started stocking up on .22 ammo. It has worked out great and the kids have joined in on the fun. We now have seven 10/22’s. All cost $219.00, except the one target gun my son bought.I shot the target and a Sig Mosquito today and had a blast.
Thanks, Les, I will take a look next time I am out there. Any idea what current prices are? Like I said, even GunBroker has scant few under $200.
Still not sure about getting one in general, simply because I do want to actually use this oversize paperweight I am backordered on, but you never know…

But I have an AR for that.

Where do you get a very sub-$200 10/22 from?
I can’t find one for much less that $200 (like in the $190’s).

I tried to get a 10/22 from Wal Mart… Dan is right. Wal Marts in Nashville have stopped selling firearms.
I ended up buying two from a dealer here this week and wrote about it at http://tinyurl.com/bzehsa.

Now, take that tech-sight equipped 10/22 to an Appleseed shoot! (http://www.appleseedinfo.org)

Linoge, the Wal-Mart in Alcoa at Hunter’s Crossing sells 10/22s. That’s where I got mine last fall.
