Cheap Booze
I usually like the good (i.e., more spendy) stuff. But, note to self: for the money, Evan Williams is pretty damn good.

+1 on Evan Williams, and a +2 for Ezra Brooks.

Evan Williams is one of the best deals in bourbon.

There is nothing wrong with Old Forester either. Check out the past Gourmet magazine for a defense of bourbon.

Metulj, Wow. I think we agree on something for the second time.

I’m a big fan of Pikesville Rye. It’s a little hard to find around here (even though it’s a “Maryland” style rye) and it’s a niche product, so the stores have a bit of trouble knowing how to price it. I’ve seen it from anywhere between a $11 to $21 a fifth. The eleven buck version tastes just as good as the one priced at twenty one.

Early Times is my cheap bourbon. For just a little more Ezra Brooks is good stuff if the store has it.

If you’re moving upscale a bit, Evan Williams single barrel is an amazing deal for the money.

Also, one day we need to pitch in, hire a driver and do the Kentucky Bourbon Trail … they’ll probably need an extraction team to pull me out of the Woodford distillery.

I used to drink Ezra Brooks all the time, but whiskey is limited to special occasions only, for me these days. The last time I had whiskey was on Halloween.
But today, my wife wants to take us to a friend’s for an overnight visit and I was able to negotiate a bottle of Jack Daniels, that I’ll be taking there, for agreeing to go. Maybe it’s only that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but I think that Jack Daniels is a superior whiskey even at the price it is.

Evan Williams is the bar brand choice when you order your Jack and Coke. Most people can’t tell the difference and the mark up becomes a lot easier. Evan Williams Single Barrel is the best deal going on Bourbon period. Makers is good, but I actually prefer the Evan Williams SB over it.

Evan Williams is ok. Haven’t tried the EWSB
Woodford is my house Bourbon, though I serve commemorative Belgium gold medal Jack Daniels in my office.
Can’t stand Early Times. Got a case of the swill yuck! Though I have to say I also have a bottle of their pre mixed Mint julep and its mighty fine and tasty. We use Early Times for mixed drinks.
Sister in law is partial to Old Charter or something. But she “claims” to be from Mississippi (that’s what Ole Miss will do to you) so I take her recommendation with a grain of salt (or shot of booze).
If you guys do the Bourbon Trail, would consider flying down for it.

Not to defend mississippi or anything, but I’ll defend the old charter. As we used to say when I was an undergrad, “I’m a signatory.”
Seriously, though, it’s pretty good. Considering its price point, it’s unbelievably good.
Then again, I went to UA, so perhaps my judgement is suspect as well, especially when commenting on a Knoxville resident’s blog…

This is truth – their single barrel stuff is actually quite good.

Old Grandad is the shizzle.

NK, that old Jack Daniels Black label is absolutely the best. The only thing I’ve ever had that beat it was when they came out with a centenial Jack. It was superb!!!!
