I’ve been thinking about buying the NRA endorsed insurance…there’s appears more inclusive, but it’s only available in the old Southwest. We Marylanders are SOL.
Those are the same provisions of the personal liability policy, except for the criminal defense costs. Yes, please read your homeowners policy as they have personal liability typically attached.
“Lawful use of a legally possessed firearm” bears no resemblance to personal liability wording. The wording is all encompassing regarding use of firearms.
Most personal liability policies exclude “intentional acts” so at best you will be in an argument with your insurance company (including legal fees) and at worst your situation will be declined.
Yeah, my State Farm guy tried to reassure me by saying “oh, intentional acts means something premeditated, not spur of the moment like self defense”. My lawyer pointed out that what your ins salesman says isn’t going to override what’s in the policy document, and they simply need to say “right or wrong, when those Bloods cornered you in the alley and tried to kill you and you fired upon them…you INTENDED to, it wasn’t an accidental shooting” and they can deny coverage. He advised me that a typical homeowners personal liability is great for when your neighbor slips on a banana peel in your kitchen…but is kinda like hoping your GEICO or Progressive policy will cover you if total your car driving it around a race track at a driver’s school. IOW…better have a purpose built self defense liability policy.
Mailed my check today. Frankly it’s crazy I waited this long.
And from what I’ve read…car ins companies might cover your loss if you wreck at driver’s school…but they’ll promptly drop you afterward. Not the end of the world…but if you’re facing $50K in legal fees defending a civil suit because Pookie and DeyDey’s survivors smell a fat tort suit and they wanna get rich quick…it is a big deal if your insurance company tells you to go fuck yourself.

Given what I have to deal with in Baltimore and the political/tort climate here…I need to get it. Logging on…
