More from Cheaper Than Dirt
A clarifying comment from Daniel regarding their position on Cali ammo sales:
Let me clarify our position a bit.
Right now, we are selling ammunition to California.
When the law takes effect in January 2011, we will cease ALL sales to California to any individual, agency, law enforcement or government body.
It’s not that we wouldn’t love to continue selling ammunition, but the restrictions placed on us by the new law would make it impossible. For example: one of the mandates of the new legislation requires us to obtain fingerprints from the purchaser for each and every purchase. This is, of course, impossible to accomplish for our phone sales or internet sales. Based on our reading of the legislation, all internet and phone sales of ammunition will be illegal.
Because of this, and various other restrictions this new law places on ammunition sales, Cheaper Than Dirt! has made the decision to cease all ammunition sales to any individual as well as all law enforcement agencies.

It sounds like Cheaper than Dirt did all they could, but it looks like fleeing California is the only viable solution for them.
I hope the other ammo manufacturers will follow suit with CTD and Barrett.

A Republican signed the bill.

Arnold is an Arlen Specter Republican.
Meaning not at all.

RML,
Ahnold? A Republican? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! In Name Only. Hence the abbreviation, RINO.

Ask anyone in the idiotslature in Sacramento, CTD could just ask the ammo buyer to put their finger on their cell-phone camera and take a picture of the fingerprint! 🙂 That’s how smart our smart-guys are so smarty-smart.
The Teacher’s Union, Government Employees Union, and the SEIU run Sacramento now – Arnold does as he’s told.

This law only applies to handgun ammo.

And what isn’t “handgun ammo” under the law? My understanding is that the term applies to any cartridge that has ever been used in a handgun. Which is most of them nowadays. Even shotgun ammo (except perhaps 10ga) has been used in handguns.

Going to be interesting to see what California shooters actually DO about this. We see their Junior teams at Camp Perry every year. They have worked around some very repressive laws for years.
Very bad news.

I’m signed up with Valor Corp in Florida, but almost all of their ammo is out of stock. If you know of any distributor with easy online sales let me know.

I have not read the law [as I should have] but what effect does it have on reloading?
January 6th, 2010 at 1:42 am
This sounds good and all…but. How much ammo does cheaper then dirt sell to police agencies. I see them more likely to purchase directly from dealers or wholesalers. this ban on law enforcement agencies is a certain ammount of showmanship on their part.

AB962 only regulates handgun ammmo. They could still comply with the law and sell shotgun and rifle ammo.
I suppose there is some potential for confusion, i.e. is .22LR rifle or pistol ammo? How about .223, given that AR pistols are available? And the Taurus Judge is a handgun that shoots .410 shotshells.

From the statues:
(a) “Handgun ammunition” means ammunition principally for use in pistols, revolvers, and other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person, as defined in subdivision (a) of Section 12001, notwithstanding that the ammunition may also be used in some rifles.
12318. (a) Commencing July 1, 2010, the sale or other transfer of ownership of handgun ammunition may only occur in a face-to-face transaction with the seller or transferor being provided bona fide evidence of identity from the purchaser or other transferee. A violation of this section is a misdemeanor.
So…. no telephone or internet sales.

We will not sell any ammunition AT ALL in California after Jan. 2011.
The distinction between “handgun” ammunition and “rifle” ammunition is terribly blurred at this point. I can buy handguns chambered in everything from .308 Win to .233 to .410, even 7.62×39 and more.
Does that make these rounds “handgun” ammunition? The law is not distinct.
The legal consequences for Cheaper Than Dirt! are not worth the risk – therefore we will cease ALL ammunition sales to all individuals and law enforcement agencies California if this law takes effect.

Edit: should be .223
