Carry in NYC
Make a federal case out of it:
Undercover cop Richard Cowan spent three years risking his life posing as the manager of a carting company to take down Gambino and Genovese crime family gangsters.
The dangerous assignment led to 73 convictions and brought threats from wiseguys, forcing Cowan and his family to relocate from their Staten Island home. But despite his heroism and fear of mob retribution, the NYPD won’t let Cowan carry a gun.
The 25-year veteran retired in 2008 on a medical disability after he suffered a head injury in a 2006 car accident on the job.
The department denied him a “good guy” letter — which states that a retiring cop is fit to carry a gun — because he was taking Amitriptyline, a medication that can cause suicidal thoughts.
This guy seems to meet the criteria outlined in the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act

Has anyone investigated the officers who made the decision for mob ties?

Staying in NYC—which is really not all that big—after burning the mob like that seems like a monumentally moronic idea. Might as well be suicidal.

That’s quite common for NYC, they are known for not following the law.

NY does not recognize HR218.

You’re not getting it. NY does not care about federal law.
January 11th, 2010 at 7:16 pm
doesn’t mean they’re not bound by it nor that a lawsuit will not succeed.

Why should I or anyone else care if a NY cop who doubtless enthusiastically enforced unconstitutional gun laws gets to continue to be one of the “special people” after he retires? By working for the NYPD, he supported, defended and probably enforced the idiotic laws that are victimizing him; too damn bad if he has to be just like the other serfs in NYC when he retires.

because this guy’s a bit more likely to succeed in a suit of some sort.

I’m will to bet that the only thing his suit will do is ensure that other retired cops on disability are allowed to carry; won’t do a damn thing for non-“only-ones”.
