Teens kill police dog

In self defense. Keep your dog restrained. Even your police dog.

I dunno, reading that article I have my suspicions. If I were a betting man, I’d say that the dog wandered into the airsoft game and one of the teenagers thought it would be funny to shoot the dog. I’d put the odds on the one with the bites on the left forearm.

Things just went downhill from there.

  2. SayUncle Says:

the dog should not have been wandering.

  3. coyote Says:

Kid’s probably did something stupid, but dog should not have been loose. Everyone’s fault.

  4. TomcatsHanger Says:

    Damn. That’s just sad.

  5. John Smith Says:

Can airsoft pellets make a dog do that? I mean they are plastic. Not like bb’s or pellets. Those kids had to have done something far stupider than that to anger the dog. Probably tried to chase it off. Police dogs react very negatively to negative reinforcement. Will the officer be fined for not properly maintaining a facility that will hold a dangerous animal? Probably not.

  6. JP Says:

I’m guessing that the dog probably got hit by a stray pellet and that is how it all started.

I don’t think the witness is very credible if he did not see the fight break out.

  7. Andrew C Says:

I don’t think we can really know either way on this one. The police officer should face some internal discipline for failing to keep his dog contained. I do consider it reasonably likely that one of the boys shot at the dog, in which case that boy should face some punishment too. If one of the boys did shoot at the dog, it’s likely one of the other boys will fess up within a few weeks.

Airsoft pellets would not penetrate the dog’s skin, but could hurt enough to make the dog think it was being attacked.

  8. Ambulance Driver Says:

Not familiar with all the ins and outs of police canine training, but back in the day when I was a pro retriever trainer, some of my colleagues who trained guard dogs trained their dogs to go into attack whenever someone (other than their handler) displayed a weapon.

It’s possible that’s what happened here.

  9. Dave R. Says:

That dog just wanted to go home at the end of its shift! Those teens should have lied back and took it like they’d have to for non-canine officers! You civilians have no idea what it’s like to risk your lives every day for the sheep!

I think that is the normal line for police officers.

  10. Robert Says:

Probably more of a case where the dog saw people that had guns, even though they were airsoft, and “padding” on, and reverted to his training days where the exersize with the guy in the padded suit and gun gets bit on the arm by the dog. He was conditioned to go after that sort of target, and that’s exactly what he did.

They’ll probably try to convict the kids for killing a police officer.

  11. Robert Says:

Oh, it’s odd that they were carrying real knives while playing airsoft. Back when I was playing paintball, it was a gross violation to carry a knife onto the field.

  12. Lyle Says:

What do we have here– an anti gun dog?

“Oh, it’s odd that they were carrying real knives…”
I always thought the standard was that all kids beyond toddler age carried knives. Carrying one in a paintball game is no different from carrying one any other time. What’er you gonna do? Load the knife in the gun and fire it at someone? No. Get in a knife fight over who hit who with a paintball? Bit of a stretch there, as that would apply equally to any other competitive game.

  13. Rivrdog Says:

In my LEO career, I entertained the idea of becoming a K9 troop, so I hung with the K9 people for a while, and even acted on permanent assignment as the “rover” officer as part of a 2 + dog team for a year. The dogs (Patrol dogs) ARE trained to attack a gun-wielder, with the possibility of being recalled by the handler. With no handler, the dog was merely living out his training.

The police should carefully investigate how the dog “broke out” of his run. Those runs are of a standard design, cost $5-8K to construct, and are as impossible for the dog to get out of (on his own) as design and construction can make them.

Lots of fact-finding yet to do in this case.

  14. straightarrow Says:

well Robert you must have lived in Vaginaland. Everywhere else even gentlemen do not consider themselves properly dressed without a pocket knife.

  15. Robert Says:

straightarrow & Lyle: Do you carry a knife while playing Football? Basketball? Hockey? Baseball?

    I didn’t think so.

If you’d bother to look at the rules and regulations of any paintball league, I think you’d find that all of them prohibit the carry of knives on the field of play.

I guess these youngsters were not doing it as any kind of organization, but just horsing around, which is bad enough. They didn’t deserve to be attacked by a dog though, if it was an unprovoked attack.

  16. mariner Says:

    straightarrow,

Don’t we all live in Vaginaland today?

    Robert,

So it’s bad for kids to play without being part of some organization? I’m glad I didn’t grow up in your world.

  17. geekWithA.45 Says:

    >>Do you carry a knife while playing Football? Basketball? Hockey? Baseball?

Yes, Robert. With the sole exception of sterile areas, I have continually carried a knife since I was 13, and so did everyone I knew.

    —————-

Others have hit a point I tried to make yesterday, before we lost power to the snow.

Intentionally or not, Police dogs are trained to attack the guy wearing padding and holding a gun, a description which is *exactly* met by kids playing airsoft and wearing padding.

I don’t have a better idea, but we should certainly give some thought and review to the concept of reflexively deploying lethal force of dog attack against the lawful activity of wearing padding and carrying guns. Cops aren’t allowed to shoot you for that reason alone, and their dogs arguably shouldn’t be trained to try to eat you for it either.

They’re cops, not military. They wanna use dogs? Train a chihuahua to sniff coke.

  18. straightarrow Says:

Yes, Robert, I carry a pocketknife everywhere. Sometimes two and on rare occassion three the third being very small and handy for delicate things. I have carried a pocketknife since I was in grade school, way more than fifty years ago.

I have even been asked by a cop why I had such a large pocketknife. I told him, then I showed him. I just happened to have some rope with me that needed whipstock and eyelet. As I said, it is a tool. It is also the mark of a fully dressed gentleman.

  19. straightarrow Says:

Oh, and Robert what is with your penchant for regimentation. You never heard of kids playing without being part of some organization. Do your daughters belong to the Doll Playing Children of America. Do they only play with their dolls under supervised conditions in organized events with referees and umpires and penalty boxes and everything?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
