A push for a biometric social security card? The ACLU:
We think that card would quickly spread to other purposes, from voting to gun ownership to travel, and it will really be a permission slip for participating in American life.

A permission slip for participating in American life????

I think I misunderstood your post. It seemed like the ACLU was saying that was a good thing. But the article was saying the ACLU legal counsel was warning of the dangers of such a card.
The ACLU has its uses sometimes…this is one of them.

Yes. that was my point.

Well, it’s not like you need a government ID on you from the moment you walk out of your front door, just in case the cops accost you.
Oh wait, in Arizona, you do: http://exurbanleague.com/Home/tabid/40/EntryId/233/The-Second-trumps-the-Fourth-at-least-in-Arizona.aspx

State of FL is already doing what amounts to the same thing. To renew my drivin’ licence, I am now required to produce 3 sets of documents proving my identity, where I live, and what my SS number is. My SS card went up in the same ashtray as my draft card years ago, and I lost my birth certificate when I lost most of the stuff I owned, a while back.
Funny; I thought a driver’s licence was just permission to drive a car on a public road, not an ID card.
I wouldn’t mind the voter’s registration card being a tamper-resistant photo-ID document, but mine is just a piece of paper which was handed to me on my bare assertion that I was qualified to vote. I offered to produce evidence that I was qualified to vote, but was rebuffed with horror by the Clerk of Elections. “We’re not allowed to consider that!” she said, while, I swear, looking over her shoulder. Goddamned dogfucking MotorVoter act!

That was the idea. Of course, your SSN wasn’t supposed to be used for anything but tracking income taxes and Social Security, either.

Oh, yeah, my SS card was oxidized to gases and ashes years ago, as I said, but I do remember the words printed on it: “Not for Identification.”

Owhell, identity cards may actually be necessary in a “diverse” society. I’ll see y’all over at Vdare.com.

Wow, it’s like the ACLU started caring about *all* of the CLs all of the sudden!

“In addition to draconian legislation passed recently in Arizona essentially legalizing racial profiling…”
Wow. Spin much?
