Gang wars
PDB on what you can learn from the recent from the cartel v. cartel gun battle. The thing that sticks out to me is that these guys train and, apparently, have a decent grasp of tactics.

Yes, and that is the scariest part. They are having the same types of problems where inner city gang members have gone to the military, received training and returned home after tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are taking thier traing home to the home boys and giving local LE a run for their money. Same principal the White Supremicist and neo-nazi guys used in 80’s and early 90’s. DANGEROUS

It makes pretty good sense the bad guys aren’t just spray firing from the MAC 10 held sideways any longer–the weapons they’re using and the personnel they’re hiring are apparently Mexican army and police deserters tired of making $11,000 a year.
They’re leaving and taking their weapons with them,
Here in one of the more violent US cities, the police aren’t being out tacticool’ed by the bad guys just yet, so that concern sounds a bit hyperbolic–if that was happening, it would be happening here…but I could see how potentially that could be a problem if they really started lowering the hiring standards for the military.

And man…what round removed the top half of that guy’s head? The one dude with a slit down the side and a missing bit of skull and brains I can see being from 7.62 at close range…but the whole top half emptied out?
August 4th, 2010 at 9:55 am
Or the military starts treating its soldiers as poorly as Mexico does….
August 4th, 2010 at 10:21 am
I’m betting the emptied head was M193 equivalent 5.56×45.
The bad guys here don’t have to face our military, and the drug lords here don’t face certain death to keep them from ratting out our corrupt government officials.
It’s a different ball game when the government works closely (corruptly) with the bad guys.

Take everything in that slideshow with a large grain of salt – it seems they borrowed some pictures that have nothing to do with that battle to make the slides.
August 4th, 2010 at 10:30 am
Maybe the emptied head is stills from a zombie movie?
5.56 can do that? Wow.
August 4th, 2010 at 10:31 am
(Meaning…gee, why so many complaints about its stopping power then? Seems that guy was stopped. If it can cause that kind of trauma to the skull, why not to the torso?)
August 4th, 2010 at 10:33 am
generally, complaints are made by people who’ve never used one to stop someone.
August 4th, 2010 at 10:38 am
The footage I’ve seen on YouTube of the insurgent with the RPG catching a salvo of 5.56 shows him being stopped just fine. Maybe it doesn’t hit as hard as 7.62×51, but it ain’t like people don’t notice when they’re hit from we’ve seen in Iraq.
The dude I’m thinking of catches one of the head…but the top half isn’t emptied out. The RPG sure doesn’t get launched!

That is a contact- or near-contact wound with a high-velocity rifle bullet.
Find a forensics textbook if you want to see more like that. I remember one photo of a guy who’d eaten his Weatherby in the back seat of his limo in NYC; his head was just opened up above the lower jaw like a popcorn kernel. I’m still glad the photo was in black and white.
Five gets you ten that Jose was all shot up already and Gomez strolled up and dotted him between the running lights for a coup de grace.

I heard on NPR yesterday that the such-and-such cartel was started by a bunch of Mexican special forces operatives. Apparently a ruthless bunch. Anyone for decriminalizing drugs so that these A-holes loose their source of funds?
August 4th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
Come on, unc, just admit you got taken on this. It’s an embellished cop report for budget time.
Have you ever seen a police study that was not biased or chicken-littled to death?
The criminals are shooting!!! Give us money or you will all die!!! Mexican special forces!!! Lions, tigers and bears!!! tH3 d34dly Z3tas!!!
This border b.s. is just a stalking horse to increase the budget bloat.

That sounds about Tam–which means the famous shot of Pvt Pyle offing himself in the latrine in Full Metal Jacket probably actually under-does the gore factor. Would explain why the other guy has a zipline of his skull missing and some brain showing but not the whole upper cranium.
Gross.

Assuming that’s true, why the leak to the RKBAsphere?
Looking at the original PDF, it appears to have been made from a “Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2007” file. The conversion was done by “Border Security Operation Center” (unless that part was spoofed)
I’ve found a forum post that hints that the file had bounced around the old email tree a few days before the scribd upload
The “created” date for the pdf conversion shows “Thu 22 Jul 2010 06:56:55 PM EDT”

I think it’s more a leak to the internets at large, which is full of voters that can call everybody from Mayor Quimby to Barry O and demand more money for the cops.
I mean, this was one bunch of narcotraficantes shooting up another bunch of narcotraficantes. A classic NHI incident.
August 4th, 2010 at 5:41 pm
I’ve found the scribd.com link on numerous forums. On a few there there’s several posts from people claiming to have gotten it in an email during July, along with other stuff.
alas, in every case, they “cant figure out how” to link to the other juicy stuff.
It’s certainly possible that all those posts may be from the same guy that “fails” at uploading.
It would be good, forensics wise, to get ahold of that other stuff. Having the original ppt file would be a goldmine. having “other photos” might reveal something in the EXIF data.
I don’t think the whole thing is a hoax, but, well my curiosity is piqued.
August 4th, 2010 at 6:24 pm
Oh, I don’t think it’s a hoax.
There was obviously a real shootout. But just a look at the gear and so forth will let you know that this wasn’t a pair of specops teams or anything.
Some Mexican drug gang guys were riding along in trucks and got roadblocked and shot up by some other Mexican drug gang guys. To read the DPS report, you’d think that this was SFOD-Delta taking down Spetznaz, not some guys with stolen rusty thumbhole stocked AK sporters and Tapco-furnitured SKS’s getting fired up by some guys with AR carbines that may or may not have been full auto.
Ooh! They have radios! Yeah so does every family at Disneyworld. This is hardly Ricky Ranger stuff.
The gratuitous extra shot of the unrelated Suburban that got fired up on an AF live-fire range is just funny. God only knows how it got in there.
August 4th, 2010 at 7:30 pm
The gang of ex-Mexican military is called the Zetas. They are every bit as ruthless and vicious as these reports make them out to me. They were used as muscle for the old cartels – but have since become ambitious.

“Assuming that’s true, why the leak to the RKBAsphere?”
So Chief Wiggum/Trooper Jethro/Ranger Walker can budget himself a gold-plated name plate on the officer door. Zomg, tH3 d34dly Mesikans are gonna kill ewe, Cledus, if you don’t agree to give more tax money to the boys in blue (or khaki in Tejas).
Come on, man, this is Texas-sized hucksterism. I can see it as plain as an oversized belt buckle on a fat Texas cop. Nothing but grifters on the take down there and here they are using some phony shootout photos.
Even money that this is real. I wouldn’t put it past those hucksters down there to phony up a shootout. Even if real, a bunch of Frito Banditos got what was coming to them, no grave concern, no reason to panic, and especially no reason to give Chief Wiggum anymore money.
August 4th, 2010 at 8:55 pm
I thought it was a little amateurish. Most of what the baddies were doing was common sense maneuvers for a dangerous situation. Personally I would have ambushed them with a group of shooters forcing them to one side of the road and used 3-4 ied’s or some m18’s daisy chained to handle the job. Would have been a lot quicker.
August 4th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
Unlike upstanding Frank Straub and the GIMP, who would never blow anything out of proportion for budgetary reasons.
Yeah, I especially like the way they got all those guys to cleverly lay there with their brains spattered on the pavement. That was awesomely posed.
I’ll take your bet on whether the shootout in question actually happened any time you want.
August 4th, 2010 at 11:42 pm
All I know is that if this shit spreads to our major cities, I better break down and upgrade my personal weapons and gear. Hate to caught going to the grocery store and some crap like that happens with just the old Colt Cobra, you know? And something tells me going to a single high cap pistol for 4:00 o’clock might not cut it. Think I need a duplicate at 8, not just some spare mags. Oh, well, time to see what Police turn-ins have arrived at the local gun store, especially since the Gen-4 Glocks are coming out. Probably find some “Obsolete” “Gen-1s” in the case.

“Unlike upstanding Frank Straub and the GIMP, who would never blow anything out of proportion for budgetary reasons.”
You can post the phony Straub/GIMP report right here=>___________.
“Yeah, I especially like the way they got all those guys to cleverly lay there with their brains spattered on the pavement. That was awesomely posed.”
If Ranger Walker enhanced his report with phony Suburban photos why would anything these yeehaws did be credible?
“I’ll take your bet on whether the shootout in question actually happened any time you want.”
Even money=50-50 (without any juice). 50% credibility won’t work, not even in Texas.

You mean the Frank Straub that was on TV the other day, claiming that persons unknown were busting caps at his officers? That Frank Straub?
