It’s an AK, it will still suck
Don’t bother decking it out. It will still feel like a clunky baseball bat no matter what you put on it. And it still won’t look right. It’s an AK. I don’t care for them even though I should.
However, if you want to put a sight on it, get a rail from Ultimak. Then you can co-witness with an Aimpoint, if you get Ultimak’s low rings. But leave the wood on it. Other stocks suck more.

Shhhh! if He replaces his furniture I might be able to grab that old stuff for my WASR!!!

Tsk Tsk tsk… such hate.
Aks are like ugly girlfriends: They will always be there when you need them. 🙂

Heh. Thanks a lot Unc…
Realistically, I’m doing this only because I live in MA and ZOMG IT’S AN EVIL BLACK RIFLE.
Black furniture is scarier. It’s a proven fact. That’s why ARs now come in a more friendly dark earth…

“That’s why ARs now come in a more friendly dark earth…”
So if we “green-wash” our guns some of the lefties might leave us alone?

I must repectfully disagree. My self and my cohorts have customized ours and they ROCK. While it still suffers from some design fetures that just are what they are, the accuracy effective range and comfort of operation have improved greatly from optics and add ons atributed to a rail system. also, because of the new similairities adapted from other weapons systems, our performance on the AK has gone up.

UTG makes an aluminum quad rail that you can put a vertical fore grip on. I have one on my Yugo under folder, and it is extremely strong and stable.
But I agree with Uncle, whenever I need to shoot paper or any game smaller than a poodle, I immediately switch to my AR-15. It’s just a better all-around weapon, and you can tell that its refining and technological advancements make it eminently better than the AK. For shooting chihuahuas.

AK guy,
I’ve got a UTG grip on my Bushmaster and I’ve been *very* impressed with it. I’ll probably wind up with the same thing on the AK.
See, I’ve got a Glock and I’ve got 1911s.
I have Smith & Wesson and Colt revolvers.
I have an AR and an AK.
I’m like the Unitarian of gun owners…

Something about AKs and mud and firepower
Something about ARs jamming and being whimpy
Something about WTSHTF

I was going to trick my M70AB2 out, but opted for the Williams Peep Sight system instead. It’s amazing how damned accurate those peeps are.
Plus you don’t have all the added bulk and weight which helps when you grab it barrel-first and try to hit a curve ball with it. I love those clunky baseball bats.

Yah know, I always hear people telling my rifles are harmless to anything larger than a poodle. But to date, no one has volunteered to stand in front of the pointy end to prove that point.

What Unc says. Change the trigger group to get rid of the slap — worst part of the AK — and do the Ultimak/AimPoint addition, and you’ll have the best assault rifle on the planet, for less than a grand.
Worst day of my gunny life was when I had to sell mine, equipped as above, to pay the utilities.

Your old note about the AK firing a better bad-guy stopper than the AR is moot, since you’ve now go the ballistically superior 6.8 in your stable.

Blech, I have an AK type in my gunsafe. It’s came from a friend who moved to New York City. I can’t stand the thing. I’d have sold it by now if I didn’t have hope my friend will either move away from NYC OR will suddenly have the legal right to own one there. After a few years, I had to buy magazines for it and get some ammo on principle but I’ve never taken it to the range for my own purposes.
My preference for big rugged EBR’s are FALs. Get one with wood furniture if you want something scary and not so EBR ish.

You just need a GOOD AK. My VEPR II rocks!
Hey, Kim, how’s things? 🙂
August 12th, 2010 at 3:10 pm
I’d rather have a Winchester 94 than an AK. I’d have to build an AK to get one here anymore given their costs have risen.

Why do you hate America, Unc?
August 12th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
I often think about the AK that I “owned” for a year. It had the original owner’s name and address carved into the right hand side of the stock: Nuygen Van Heip, Tuy Hoa ( Providence ). I wonder what happened to Nuygen and why I ended up with his rifle. regards, Alemaster

It would be best to have your furniture made of sustainability harvested non-old-growth wood that was cut, shaped, and finished by real third-worlders who get paid a living wage and started their business courtesy of a UN sponsored micro-loan.
However, there’s still that Bush Sr. Executive order that requires, if you re-assemble your rifle, to have a certain number of US made “magic parts”. The forearm (upper and lower) count as one part, the stock is another.

It’s not so much the Gun for me, but the cost of Ammo! How come I can spend 30 cents a pop for Russian ammo in bulk, yet when I look for 30-06, its over a $1.00 a round, and when you say the word Bulk to a distributor, all you hear is sniggering!? Damn it this is America! We INVENTED the 30-06, won TWO World Wars and pushed the Commies back across the 38th. Parallel with that round! I’m tired of seeing Springfields and Garands turning into Wallhangers! Enough of giving cash to Putin! Enough of the WSSM and 204 Ruger and 17HMR and other useless wastes of Brass and Powder and Lead and Primers! I want Cheap, reliable ’06! And make some cheap 357 and 45 ACP while you’re at it, too!

I’m on slow dialup, so I can’t go looking around Youtube for the video.
But there is on Youtube a video of a South African special police unit who specializes in destroying old arms caches left over from the various wars in the region in the 1970s and 1980s.
In one video, the group parachutes into Mozambique, at least I think it’s Mozambique.
They dig up a big arms cache, including AK’s that were simply buried in the African soil 20 to 30 years ago.
No special wrapping. No containers. Somebody just dug a hole, dumped the AK in, and filled the dirt back on top of it.
The police officer digs up the AK and pours maybe 1/4 of a can of regular motor oil over it. He uses his boot to kick open the rusty bolt.
Then he picks up a mag full of ammo that was buried right beside the AK.
He shakes the dirt out of the mag, locks it into place, and racks the bolt.
Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang, etc, without fail.
Try burying any other auto rifle in such a way, leaving it for two decades, and then getting it to work by simple application of motor oil and one well-placed boot.
