Amazon wandering

I decided I needed a large bug out knife. Not sure why but it sounded like a good idea. So, I ordered this large Kukri from Ka-bar. And because I liked that, Amazon suggested I would also like the FatMax Xtreme Fubar Functional Utility Bar. And how can I not get a tool like that?

How do you like the Kukri? I’m thinking about getting one.

    i’ll let you know wednesday.

    Oh come on!

I bought a cheap Kukri about 20 years ago. I like it better than the modern style ones because of the heft. The blade is about a quarter inch thick. It works better in hatchet mode than the kbar variety.

On the other hand, it has a wooden handle, that sucks, and it is made of high carbon steel and will rust in a blink of an eye.

I wish I could find something that was more the best of both of those worlds.

It’s a shame Cold Steel no longer makes their inexpensive kukri. I bought one years ago. You could shave with the knife out of the box. I use it for a “house-knife” for utility work around the house, like prying off wood, chopping down small trees or pruning branches. It’s been camping with me (you might remember it, Uncle, as it went with us on our trips to Dale Hollow) and has been used to chop wood. I actually used it on the weekend before last when the boy and I went camping. It takes and keeps a good edge easily. This would be my “bug out” knife.

I have a Ka-bar Fighting/Utility knife that I like, so I know they also make quality items.

That would be a great tool to add to a vehicle toolbag.

I agree, I guess, with Nylarhotep. The best kukris are the Indian ones. The plain steel is fine at around jackhammer hardness — say 45RC or so. You don’t want it at 58RC. It is closer to an axe than a knife. It will “go dull” more quickly but you freshen the edge with a couple of strokes of a coarse stone or file. You won’t be shaving with it and it won’t break while your chopping down saplings to build your lean-to. As for rust, just wipe it off every time you use it and don’t leave it lying around in your tackle box, the bottom of your bass boat, or even your car trunk.

I have nothing against the fancy stainless steels, but they are really made for jet engine turbines. For a knife or axe, a simple carbon steel is just fine.

I have one of the standard ones rattling around in my truck toolbox 24/7. Great knife and cheap enough that I don’t care if it gets beat to death.

That FatMax Utility Bar could be used as a barrel wrench in a pinch. Looks like just the ting to add to the truck box.

“And how can I not get a tool like that?”

Because the Dead On AN18 Annihilator is cooler. It’s black, has a skull logo, and looks like it wants to impale something. And if they market it as “tactical” it would justify the the higher price.

    Tactical? Well, mine is Titanium.

  12. Erik Says:

I have one the kukri’s and the Dead On bar. Both have served me pretty well around the house, and I don’t see any reason to replace either one. The Kabar has been keeping its edge for me for general work – cutting down branches and small bushes and the like, and the bar has enough heft to pretty much take out anything I need it to.

  13. MissouriFirearms Says:

Looks like a great little prybar. My only discrepancy is the $9 shipping and handling. I try my best to stay away from any product on Amazon that doesn’t include shipping! That’s where they get you!

  14. Ted N(not the Nuge) Says:

Both will come in very handy when the Zombie Apocolypse starts. Good choices. Any favorite tomahawks? You can kill anything with a tomahawk!

  15. Affe Says:

These kukris are nepal-made and pretty sweet – I’ve had the 15″ Ang Khola for years and used it for just about everything around a campsite. The sirupatis are things of beauty.

  16. RobertC Says:

I’ve had a Ka-Bar Kukri for a little over six years now. It’s a little heavy for a machete of its size, but it’s a really good chopper and is very sturdy.

Ever see a halligan tool? Used by firemen and rescue workers.

  18. junyo Says:

+1 on the Cold Steel Kukri machete

And when it comes to fat Max FUBARs, don’t get the “purse sized” one:

I’ve done demo with that sucker, and am prepared to say with conviction that you could disassemble anything in existence with it. Doors, walls, zombies, true love, yippy dogs, subatomic particles, abstract concepts. That SOB does not care. It smashes.

  19. Peter Says:

…and if you sprayed some black Duracoat on it you’d have a “Stanley 55-099 Tactical FatMax Xtreme Tactical Fubar Functional Tactical Utility Tactical Bar”

    🙂

  20. DirtCrashr Says:

The main issue with my old Kukuri is the partly wooden scabbard – it’s just bulky. But the blad should be heavy and a bit thick, it does all the work.
Gurkhas could take a little off the top of a German in a foxhole with one swipe and he wouldn’t make a sound, so they must have been sharp too, or else there’s some secret-mountain Shangri-La-Hillbilly technique they use. In India the mountain-tribe people are looked down upon as low-class, barely better than an untouchable…

  21. KCSteve Says:

Back when they came out the ever-indulgent wife got me both sizes of the Fubar. The little one is good for minor mayhem but as Junyo said, for real damage you want the full size. Actually, I’d like an even larger one.

Or were you talking about a different one?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
