Open carry lawsuit
Handcuffed faced down on his stomach for open carrying. Now, he’s suing. Also, this is interesting:
Police took the .45 caliber handgun and his ammunition, and asked if he had documentation for the weapon. Haman said he showed a purchase receipt and a concealed-weapon permit although it’s not required for open carry.
Really? Who carries a receipt for the purchase of their gun?

Anyone who spent any time in Louisiana, where the officers used to confiscate guns they found unless you had the reciept on you:

Maybe he had scanned it and stored a copy in his iphone/android?
I expect in the future, people will be offered an electronic receipt for everything they buy.

Probably for the same reason I carry a copy of my form 4 around with my sub-machine gun even though it’s not required anywhere.

Or anybody who knows that when you Open carry these days you face a very real chance of being accosted by cops who know nothing about the law, and have little respect for individual freedoms.
Actually sounds like not a bad idea really, especially if you have a specific carry gun you’d use for OC. Might be a smart move for me to keep a copy of my Mass FA-10 form for just that.
Let’s face it, Open carry encounters with law enforcement are either going to go VERY well, or VERY VERY poorly. There is ZERO middle ground these days.

It’s not? I always have mine. But, no, I probably don’t have the receipt.

It’s probably meaningful that in the article linked, the Police Commissioner referred to the police as “troops.”

Only paranoiacs who think the cops are going to prone them out and confiscate it…
Wait…
You know, I wish I’d thought of this; it doesn’t seem half so crazy as it did a few moments ago. Too bad I don’t even have receipts for half of mine.

In Michigan you have 10 days from the date of purchase to get your handgun registered. If you’re in that window having the receipt is one way to show you’re not breaking the law.
Or it could be what Tam said.

It’s Bad Law, but a lot of little Burgs up here still have on their books the fact that each Firearm MUST be Registered, so having Documentation on you for the Weapon might not be a Bad Idea, especially when the Police Chief’s Niece can’t “Find” the Registration Form in her City Clerks Office. It’s that “Only One” Attitude, remember.

“Really? Who carries a receipt for the purchase of their gun?”
It happened in Michigan. And in Michigan, you are required to carry your copy of your Permit to Purchase
for 30 days or, if you have a CPL as in this case, a copy of the RI-60 (Firearms sales record). So, all of the snide comments about this gun owner being paranoid are unwarranted here. This guy is a law abiding citizen who is dealing with some jag-off cops who don’t know the laws. Some of you smart-asses might want to do your homework before engaging your typing fingers.

Because of all the people who have been proned out, I started scanning copies of all my purchases and emailing them to myself.
Now I can access those scanned receipts through my phone.
Might not be a bad idea to save the PDF files directly to my phone.

Lakebound has it right.
This was in Michigan and one of the really weird laws is that we have to carry our copy of the firearms sales record for the first 30 days after we register a handgun anytime we have that handgun in public.
It’s a stupid law, but it is the law, and it does come up from time to time.
So, that’s who “carries a receitp’ for their gun. It’s not a sign of someone who “expects to be proned out.”

“We have to train and educate our troops when things like this happen,” said Green, “and we certainly do.”
Like teaching them to be aware of what country they’re in?

Rob Reed,
I’m thinking you didn’t read my comment in its entirety.

Civil rights activists make sure they have planned for every eventuality.

“Troops”…
Last time I heard that I was in the military. I’m getting sick and tired of LEOs (including many that I know personally) referring to the general populace as “civilians”. I guess because of repeatedly ignoring the laws civilians are obliged to abide by, they simply don’t get it that they are civilians, too.

Hell, I was OCin in a Long John silvers, in teh bad part of town, next to 2 cops. No mention even.
Fortunately have never had anything other than a bit of an education encounter with a local officer as he looked real hard for a law saying it wasn’t legal (for me to OC into a police station, while there on personal business of reporting a crime). In the end, he couldn’t find one 🙂

My was reading the article and then encountered a stop phrase:
“… and has openly packed heat …”
I knew where this was going and stopped reading.
