Speaking of losing your job
I did too. But here’s something that struck me funny:
Of the more useless websites out there, careerbuilder.com is one of them.

Wait, you’re without a gig?
September 22nd, 2011 at 10:18 am
I am gig-less. More like gig-light. Doing some consulting.

But we’re in a recovery! A RECOVERY DO YOU HEAR!

I’ve never gotten results from CareerBuilder, except some recruiter saw my resume there.
On the other hand, I’ve gotten 6 phone calls in the past year from recruiters who saw me on LinkedIn.
Even though–or perhaps because of–my LinkedIn account said I was employed.
Weird, but the headhunters were looking for still-employed people who might feel a little underpaid, rather than recently-unemployed who might put in a lot of effort to keep their next job…

As one who is gig-less as well (and consulting-less), LinkedIn, TheLadders, RiteSite and your college alumni career centers are best for applications. The mass blast (e.g., 2000+)recruiter emails also will turn up a few calls.
It is slow out there but people are hiring. It’s just what, when and where that’s the problem
Good luck,
Kris

Misery loves company. Good luck finding something. I myself seriously underestimated the hope and change. It’s rough out there.

You could try Linked-In, it’s Facebook for
the unemployedConsultants! It even tries to email “Your People” with your updates!September 22nd, 2011 at 3:11 pm
No gig here, but it gives me time to plan the Revolution 2.0

LinkedIn is the place to be right now, especially if you’re in IT. Getting lots of cold calls/emails these days from recruiters.
Having said that, Careerbuilder has been of some use to me. My past 3 jobs have been found on Careerbuilder.

I’m out gigging too.
If I understand Linked-in (I’m a newbie to it), and judging from the updates from other people I get,you probably want to get all your “storyline” together offline, then post it up. Otherwise, it will send out updates on your “incomplete” profile. Try to look sharp as soon as you hit the scene on Linked-in.
Create your account so you can see how it’s laid out, then come back full force.
It needs a “don’t send out my updates just yet” feature.
I am working on my job histories, bios, literary citations, and other project propaganda right now. I call them the BullSh!t Papers, and it will be about 10-15 pages when I am done, and will appear there all at once.

Dude, sorry to hear it.
