Bleg: DAV converter
CCTV camera makes files with a *.dav extension and it comes with a player. However, I cannot upload those or share them with people. Anyone know how to convert DAV files to something useful?
Update: Nevermind. Recorder came with a converter.

unc,
It can get a little complicated, it all depends on what kind of DAV file you have.

There are plenty of free converters out there. Are you using Windows?

Is it the camera making that directly, or a DVR attached to it?
(Ie, is it a “net camera” that outputs an encoded stream, or a plain coax camera that you’re recording via a DVR or a capture card?)
Net says you can get DVRs that use sensible formats, with some searching – and if the price is sensible, it might be a million times better than hacking together half-assed converters.
(If it was me, and I had plain video feeds, I’d route them into a computer with some capture hardware, and do it all in software. But that’s me – YMMV.)

Using windows. And the camera appears to dump them to a DVR.

Videolan.org has a great, free player/converted called VLC (Videolan Client). If VLC doesn’t play the file then it’s not worth watching 🙂

Could you put a small sample up and email me a link?

I’ll echo VideoLan/VLC. I use it cross-platform (Linux/OS X) and it’s the reel deal.
See what I did there?
