More pocket 9 blogging

The Sig P290 is getting a new trigger. I handled those at the gun show this past weekend and I did like the size.

I also handled the Diamondback DB9 and liked its feel.

Anyone try either of these?

The case against the pocket 9. I know I don’t need a pocket 9. But I’m basically simplifying my ammo stores. I may even dump my 45s.

    BLASPHEMER! Burn him! Burn him!

Good call on dumping the .45s, 9mm offers better capacity in a smaller size and essentially the same terminal ballistics.

That being said, I doubled down and got a pocket .45

A buddy of mine wrote a review on his DB9 here: http://www.bluesheepdog.com/2011/11/07/diamondback-db-9-pistol-review/ Overall, he really liked it. It took a few rounds to break it in, but it has been 100% in the past 300-400 rounds.

I also did a review of a DB9 (same model/different gun) here: http://www.gunsholstersandgear.com/2011/09/25/diamondback-db9-review/ I really like it and it didn’t need any break in. It is about as easy to conceal as an LCP, but easier to shoot accurately. Plus the LCP I shot wasn’t reliable at all.

    I still haven’t put rounds through a P290.

Unc, any reason you seem to be steering clear of the LC9?

I’ve had one for a few months and I like it so much it’s replaced the P3AT and S&W Bodyguard as the go-to pocket gun…

It’s really about what the ammo can do for you. The .45 ACP is a low-pressure round, the 9mm Luger is a high-pressure round, as is the Forty. With a gun chambered for a low-pressure round, you can only do so much before you hit SAAMI max, and that’s all you get. With high-pressure, you can load down if you want less recoil, and load up if you want more zing.

At Buffalo Bore, the hottest defense ammo you can buy, the hottest .45 they have will net you maybe 1100 FPS and 500 #/ft out of a short “pocket 45″ barrel. That’s stout, but their .40, 155-gr offering will get you the same M/E out of the same 3” barrel.

The pocket Foatays are much more concealable guns, too, but if you choose to carry full-size, the .40 can pull almost 600 #/ft M/E with that Buffalo Bore load, and it seriously outshines the .45 ACP at that level.

Bottom line, if you could only have one pistol caliber, and wanted it to be a sure stopper, still with good ammo commonality, the Shorty Forty is your round. Yeah, there’s more 9mm ammo out there, and the Nine is certainly adequate as a stopper, but the hottest Nine is going to be over 100 #/ft shy of the best Forty.

Just haven’t gotten to it yet. Seems bigger than the other pocket 9s. And I’m wondering if all the recalls are done yet.

  7. Rivrdog Says:

I almost forgot: you can now shoot Forty out of a snubby revolver, the Charter Arms Pitbull (no moon clips!). At 20 oz and easy on the hands, the Charter Arms is a good, concealable alternative to pocket autos. A round or two less, but if 5 Forties won’t get the job done, you need the Cavalry anyhow.

  8. SayUncle Says:

Rivrdog, not a fan of .40s. 30% more cost and recoil for 10% more performance over a 9.

If I had the spare Cash (Where’s my Obama Money!?), I’d buy a Pocket 9 tomorrow. I consider them the 21st. Century version of the J-Frame. But I’d go with the Kahr.

+1 to #1. I prefer the match light charcoal.

  11. MIke Says:

I wrote to you before when you first posited the query into which pocket 9 you should look into buying: DB9. Great support, fabulous forum, no malfs in 1000+ rounds, excellent customer service, etc, etc

  12. SayUncle Says:

Thanks, I’m gonna try to get my hands on one to shoot.

  13. Darren Says:

My Glock 26 is a pocket 9. It may be that I have bigger pockets than others. My hands are pretty big and I have issues with guns that are too small, the G26 fills my hand perfectly with the Pearce +2 extension and at 12+1 it has a significant capacity boost over the micro-9s. I actually had a Kahr MK9 for about a week, it was just too small for me to feel comfortable shooting under any kind of stress. There is something reassuring about getting all four fingers on the grip.

  14. Patrick Says:

If you’re dumping your .45’s – I can give them a good home. Not dissing the 9 or the 40, just enjoy shooting the big 45. Got a Glock 30 and while I love it, it’s lonely for a friend…

  15. James Nelson Says:

A guy next to me at the range had one of those DB9s blow up using Blazer aluminum ammo. Both frame rails sheared off. It may be it was just a one time lemon, but I don’t think I’d want one.

  16. mike Says:

I’m with you on the .40s. But, dumping the .45s? Heresy!

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
