Glock v. your ego
Tam notes that people are not really defending the 1911 so much as their sense of self-worth in gun selection. I think to an extent. Pretty much, you want a gun that’s reliable, reasonably accurate and with decent stopping power. And a whole lot of guns fit that bill quite nicely.
Update: more from Robb:
you must be stupid for purchasing a Blast-O-Matic PBS 3000 and Heaven forbid you point out why my Leadchucker XKCD doesn’t work for you because golly gee, you might as well be taking a dump on my mother’s grave!
Another update: Yup.

They’re defending the Glock for the same reason. Or the M&P. Or the HK. Or the SIG. Or the Cannondale. Or the Nikon. Or the iPhone.

Oh I know. I just picked 1911 out of the hat because for years the internet was all GLOCK V. 1911!!!!!1111one.

Or Obama.

HL Wins the internets for the day.

Which is doubly funny, because a vote is a lot cheaper than a Glock, even in Chicago.

….interesting hypothesis.

“A lot of people will go to great lengths to justify money they’ve spent, especially when it was actually a waste of money.”
Quote I scraped a few years back from here.

My brother can shoot anything out of the sky with his Remington 1100, but the last pistol he shot was my .22, thirty years ago. Now, he wants a 1911. He’s a very smart guy. Strong and healthy. He’ll get instruction, and we’ll see how long the romance lasts.

Hmmm. Interesting. To paraphrase Col.Cooper, ALL Firearms are just Projectile Launching Devices. Some are made for one purpose, (like Biathlon Rifles) some are for others (like Barret .50 Cals). Some can be used for Multiple Purposes (like Shotguns), others are Specialized (like Olympic Pistols for Competition). But it all comes down to what YOU want the Projectile to do. If YOU want to spend $5,000 on a Custom 1911, fine. If YOU want to spend $400 on a used Glock, fine. But it all comes down to the Projectile.
So the REAL argument should be how 9mm is better than the .45ACP! ; )

So the internet is full of judgmental, insecure know-it-alls? I’m shocked.

If I didn’t have an ego I’d pick Glock, but I admit to liking shiny pretty stuff, especially if I can’t carry it.

There is romance in all weapons and you never know what will butter your turnips. My father thought it was a boy thing but then our family ran long on boys (he raised three, himself). I see my daughter with her three samurai swords, bokken, and bow and arrows and am not so sure.

If it’s YOUR personal preference, it needs no justification.
Do you like your choice? Good for you. I suppose it’s a little fun to advocate for your choice now and then, but none of it matters really, especially if you don’t have it with you.
If you aren’t wearing it, the the debate is really silly no?

The whole “which automatic is best” argument is moot to me since I prefer revolvers. And my favorite of those is the ORIGINAL Smith and Wesson Military and Police Model, known today as the Model 10 in .38 Special. It’s the sweetest handling and shooting handgun I’ve ever had my hands on.

The best way to not take a personal stake in the manufacturer of your handgun is to buy as many as you can from as many manufacturers as possible. It might take ten years, but it gets rid of fanboi syndrome.
And every now and then you find something surprising. Like the fact I have, in the last year, put 970 rounds through a steel Sig P238 I bought on a whim for my wife. Don’t ask me why, but I love that little gun even if it fails to lock back about 50% of the time. I have never carried it in public even though it always goes bang when I ask. And if I need more than 7 rounds…?
Sure, Glock is the “serious” gun (have two of them) and the PM9 is for discrete but “real” carry. But this morning I boxed the Sig to go back for some work (lock-back is bugging me) and I miss it already. Really, I am thinking of unboxing it and shooting it tomorrow. Then cleaning and re-packing all over again.
Can’t explain it. Just like it.
That is something the uber-fans will just never understand. Sometimes it’s just fun to try something new.

This guns and ego phenomenon is real. As an OHIO CHL Instructor, some students find it necessary to confirm their life altering purchase with me as if I am incapable of buying sucky guns just because the NRA sells me a card and a new hat every year.
I generally just try to say something positive to keep from hurting feelings or egos and not tell them that I really don’t care what they are carrying as long as it doesn’t blow up in class and their check clears.
I’ve leaned to say stuff like “HiPoint? They sure do absorb recoil”. or “Ruger? American made all the way”.
