Midnight 3 Gun
I’ll be attending Crimson Trace’s Midnight 3 Gun Invitational. And I was excited to be asked. How often do you get to do a night shoot? I’ve done it once at Mike’s place and learned a lot.
Then, it occurred to me. I’ve never shot a 3 gun match. Or any match other than Glock Sport Shooting Foundation matches (highly recommended). And I started thinking about gear. Handgun, clearly the M&P9 with the Lightguard for the handgun. My AR has a light and a mount. But the only shotguns I own are double barreled. Though, it’d be pretty bad ass if I shot the match with a 26 inch barreled double barrel shotgun. Also, I’m not much of a shotgun guy.
That and having never shot a match pretty much means I’m going to suck. Good thing I’ll be doing press coverage too.

Good luck!
Journalism is strange. In other other profession, partipating plus reviewing would be a conflict of interest. The distinction between relating one’s own experiences, and standing in judgement, is frequently blurred.

I think I’m more shooting because I can. Not because I can win, because I can’t.

Do the shotgun portion with a Judge.

For the full effect you should just hang a lantern on the end of your shotgun. Maybe use a little twine to keep it in place.

Double barrel ten gauge or gtfo.

In somewhat of the same boat myself… signing up for an FNH 3gun match and short a useable shotgun for such things, and the one I have just sits.

You can pick up a suitable Remington 870 pretty cheaply.

I’ll lend you my 870 with the Elzetta light holder and 6P if you needed it.

Gerry nails what my suggestion would’ve been.
I’ve never shot 3-gun, but an 870 or 500 with a light duct-taped to the barrel is pure win.

I saw a neat old Remington 11-48 the other day in .410 recoil action like JMB intended… Wonder if you can shoot .45LC in it?

ORSA (Oak Ridge, TN; orsaap.com) which i believe is in your neck of the woods puts on good matches monthly. Next match is this Sunday 4-22. I’ve shot a few there and have had a great time. Their IDPA matches are good too.
Damn, I use crappy gear (870 squirrel gun) and don’t give a crap, but am still totally amused.
Go get some real time practice! You’ll learn a bunch.

Somewhere out there on the internet is a Clint Smith video that shows how to do a speed reload of a double. Haven’t had a chance to try it but it it hard to doubt Clint Smith.

Say, Uncle, come back out if you like, and you can try out your kit and tactics as the sun goes down. I need to do the same. Haven’t in awhile.

You will dig actually shooting a course of fire and keeping a score addicting! It’s fun!
Have I mentioned lately that I am the CURRENT National Vintage Rifle Champion? No?

ZweCool,
At our clubs last night match, the guy running the show ran it with an AK and a HF light duct taped to the barrel. Did pretty well too. Better than me, but he is a much better shooter than I.

You know, LaserLyte makes a rail mount for a double-barreled shotgun, right?

Jim Clark had “tactical” doubles at the NRA show so it can be done. If you can swing the $, the most popular shottys for 3-Gun are the Benelli M2, FH-SLP and the Mossberg 930. All have “race-ready” versions available. For the he man type, use an 870 with an extended magazine tube.

Shooting 3-Gun is super fun! My friend has on occasion shot it with a double-barrel coach gun as his shotty and due to one of the stages starting with an empty shotgun, was rather competitive. Start with a bargain Rem870 with a TacStar magazine extension. After a few years, you can graduate to a Benelli auto. And shoot the 870 when you feel nostalgic; just don’t forget how to rack a side!
