I’ve often wondered what they were. I knew some were knives and some were shovels for the military. At 17, it became guns. Still no answer. However, I found this list which jumps straight from spade to pistol.
And, interesting bit, his most recent patent was a METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR GASIFYING CARBON-CONTAINING MATERIAL.

As a small time entrepreneur myself, several business ventures I started, or at least investigated starting, went absolutely nowhere. I suppose that between 1 and 17 there might be a few less than successful efforts at product development, which will never see the light of day.
Edison tried a whole bunch of materials before settling on a metal wire for light bulb filaments, and he didn’t advertise those failures, either.
