GSSF Shoot this weekend

There’s a Glock Shooting Sports Foundation shoot in Knoxville at the Volunteer Rifle & Pistol Club on Rifle Range Road (map here). Starts Saturday and runs through Sunday. I’ll probably be shooting in the sub-compact or amateur division since I am 1) a paper shooter and 2) my only Glock is a Glock 30.

When I stopped by Coal Creek Armory yesterday and congratulated their Employee of the Month, I bought one of these for the match because it occurred to me I did not have a magazine carrier for the Glock 30. I’m also thinking I should get one of these Galco belt holsters too. I have their Ultimate Second Amendment holster, which is great for concealment but probably not the best for competition. The belt holster seems like it could quite adequately perform double duty. What say you?

Update: And I showed my new mag carrier to the Mrs. She said it was very pretty. I have to admit, the saddle leather is quite nice.

That holster will work, but I think you would be happier (considering all the drawing and holstering you’ll be doing) with one of the plastic jobs – the Blackhawk or the RSR we talked about earlier.
Leather is nice for wearing, but when you are drawing and re-holstering all the time, the rigid ones are much easier – and the button-release ones are nicer than the friction-hold type, IMHO.
BTW, I find that the paddle types actually offer a more stable platform than the belt-loop kind.

Good point on the re-holstering. Perhaps a SERPA then?

  3. Hartley Says:

Yep – that or the RSR equivalent – not good for concealment, but VERY nice at the range. Not as pretty as leather, though..:-)

I have a couple leather thumb-break holsters – great for hiking/biking/working all day and the like, but if I’m at the range doing draw and shoot, repeat, repeat, the plastic is tops.

Galco’s are alright, and I occasionally carry my Bersa “Chick Thunder” in one of those Galco USA holsters (J-hook bugs the hell out of me though). My fave holster is definitely the Andrews MacDaniel II. Goes on in two seconds, carries very well, and the price was right.

Howdy, folks – and thanks to Uncle for the mention. Just a note: GSSF courses of fire don’t require drawing from a holster, as do IDPA & IPSC/USPSA matches generally speaking. Shooters start from a “ready” position, two hand hold, muzzel down range, finger off trigger.
You’re welcome to carry around in a holster, as it’s convenient. It’s a “cold range”, guns unloaded unless you’re actually shooting – thanks! P.S.: you folks hve nice gear…GLOCK Range Master

I gots that ‘zackt same holster. ‘Cept mines black. And for a 1911. Not a Glock. When I carry my Ultra CDP in it, it feels like the gun is getting ready to fall out of the top. A full-sized 1911 feels okay though.

Galco’s leather gear is as nice as it gets without going to a custom house like Rosen or Sparks. In fact, it’s better than quite a few “custom” makers.

Having been to several GSSF matches, what Range Master C. Edwards said is correct.

The only time you use your holster is in between the various ranges. Here in Indy I just used the plastic shorty factory one and it worked fine, except once when I was done shooting, cleared the weapon, locked back the slide, and caught the HOT barrel with my trigger finger…OUCH!!!

I would make sure you have about 4 magazines total for each pistol, mag carriers are nice, but not required, as you can sit your gear on tables at the firing lines. Be sure to have plenty of rounds too, I find that about 4-5 boxes of Winchester “yellow box”, 50 rounds each, is just about enough per pistol.

I only ran out once, and one of the range officers loaned me some CCI ammo to finish it out. Did I mention great people? 😀

I sure miss the GSSF and would love to get down to Knoxville, TN for one. The staff are always great, and it nice to see what other Glock owners have done to their firearms, if shooting modified or unlimited.

I just shoot stock civilian and have always had a blast.

Good times, good times…Happy Holidays to all!

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
